Common cold is caused mainly by infection and allergic reactions. 1) To rule the cause antibiotics should be taken as medication. Cefixime, Cephalexin, Roxithromycin are some of the best antibiotics for respiratory tract infections(RTI).
In Siddha medicine we have - Nilavembu kudineer as a best antibiotic for RTI.
2) Viral rhinitis will cease by itself after the infection is controlled. Our immune system controls viral infections by itself.
3) The next thing is to control the allergic reactions. The mast cells in the body responsible for the allergic reactions must be controlled by anti histamine drugs like Chlorphenamine maleate(CPM), Cetrizine, Levocetrizine, etc.
In siddha medicine we have - Sivanar amirtham which acts as a best anti histamine.
4) Mucolytics & expectorants play the chief role. The mucus which has accumulated has to be removed from the lung and respiratory tract, mucolytics & expectorants play the role in this. Ambroxol, Bromhexine, Guaifenesin are some of the best mucolytics and expectorants. You can get these as combination in cough syrups like Expectus, Ascoril, etc(These are for mucus accumulation. They are to be used in wet cough, for dry cough these should not be used, they will cause alveolar irritation when used in dry cough and increase the cough).
In Siddha medicine - Thalisadhi chooranam is used as mucolytic & expectorant. Muthu & Muthu chippi parpam are used with combination of Thalisaadhi chooranam for best results.
