Eligibility: To be eligible for selection applicants must have passed their 10+2 with physics, chemistry, and biology/mathematics as their elective subjects.
Selection: The selection process is based on a written test and interview.
Course objectives
During this one-year course, students are trained in taking the history of patients, refraction, eye examination including slit lamp and applanation tonometry, the use of A-scan and keratometer to calculate IOL power, and in performing community-based examinations using portable equipment.
This cadre of eye care professionals is eligible to assist ophthalmologists in the clinic, as well as participate in population screening programs for specific disorders.
Stipend and leave allowed
The trainee will receive a stipend for the one-year program from their sponsors. The trainees will be allowed as per the rules that govern the program.
Ancillary facilities
There is a large resource centre at the B & L School of Optometry for the students and the faculty. The library is well equipped with multiple volumes of journals as well as books, a slide collection, and video and audio tapes. It also has a large computer facility for viewing videotapes and access to the Internet and Medline search for journal abstracts.
Fellows also have access to the 24-hour library at the main campus in Banjara Hills.
Food and accommodation
Hostel facilities are available on a twin-sharing basis for enrolled students.
Vegetarian food is available at the cafeteria within the hostel campus.
A separate fee is charged for these facilities.
