||Ophthalmic Nursing Assistants

The aim of this program is to train young women as ophthalmic nursing assistants to provide comprehensive eye care to patients with sincerity and dedication.
The program will enable ophthalmic nursing assistants to become conversant with basic ocular anatomy and physiology. They will develop a better understanding of common eye disorders, diagnostic tests and surgical treatments, in addition to their medical and nursing skills, as a foundation for specialty training.
The ophthalmic nursing assistants will be trained in effective communication skills in the ambulatory service unit, in-patient wards and the surgical preoperative area so as to understand the role and responsibilities of being a team member in patient care.
They will assist ophthalmologists in organizing and conducting community eye care programs and also work as public health nurses. They will be trained to use their skills of assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation in providing quality care. The course will inculcate in them the thirst for continuous learning and self-improvement.
Applicants should be unmarried women candidates who have passed Class X with not less than 50 percent marks in the overall aggregate. They should be between 17 to 25 years of age.
Mode of selection
The session commences in July every year. Final selections will be held in May/June after an entrance examination and interview at LVPEI. The management decision regarding selection of candidates would be final, no appeals will be entertained. Preference will be given to applicants who have secured good marks in Science and English in Class X.
We also provide specialized short-term training to nursing personnel for delivering quality care to ophthalmic patients. The candidates eligible for this course should have successfully completed the Auxiliary Nurse Midwifery course, a multipurpose health worker or trained nursing care program, as part of a vocational course. Candidates for this program have to be sponsored by a hospital.
Internal examiners will conduct examinations at the end of each semester. There will be three theory papers followed by practicals.
The trainees’ progress will be monitored regularly and evaluated each month and the scores mailed to their parents/guardians.
At the end of both the first and second semester supplementary examinations will be held for candidates who have failed. If candidates fail in the supplementary examinations too, their names will be struck off the rolls.
Boarding and lodging
Trainees will be provided free, shared bachelors’ accommodation in our campus hostels. Accommodation is also provided at the rural eye care centers during rotation periods.
Cafeteria services are available within the campus and at the rural eye care centers at subsidized rates.
Stipend and leave
During the second year candidates will receive a monthly stipend of Rs 600.
Trainees will be allowed 12 days leave per year, in addition to designated holidays. Additional leave will be granted only for reasons of health after proper justification.
