Most organisations now spend large amounts of money on Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and on geographic databases. It is estimated that in the near future huge amounts will be spent on these items. Why should this be true when even just a few years before, GIS was a rarity? The reasons are lower costs and globalisation.
GIS is capable of holding and using data describing places and features on the earth’s surface. It is used to efficiently capture, store, update, analyse, query, and display all forms of geographically referenced information. Some of the geographic features include hydrological data, topography, landuse, utilites (telecommunication lines, power transmission lines, oil & gas pipelines, etc.) soils, streets, districts, land parcels etc.
Like wordprocessing, spreadsheets, databases, and web publishing, GIS is becoming another demanded skill in the workplace and has developed into its own profession complete with associations, conferences, specialized data and software companies, consultants, and a career path.
