Gangolihat town is situated in Pithoragarh district in Uttarakhand state. It is about 76 Km by road in a westerly direction from the Pithoragarh town (which is the district headquarter).

Gangolihat is situated at an altitude of 1350 m from the sea level. As per the year 2011 census, the population of Gangolihat was around 72000. The area is bounded by two rivers Saryu and Ramganga which meet at a place called Ghat which is a nodal place in between Gangolihat, Pithoragarh, Almora, Tanakpur and Haldwani. Summer is the best time to visit this place. If one is planning to visit here in winters than adequate woollens, muffler and cap will be required for protection from the cold. There are other small hill stations namely Chokori and Berinag near Gangolihat. There are many villages around Gangolihat town and the town market caters, as the main market and vegetable and milk trading place for them.

From Gangolihat, one can have an excellent view of Himalayan ranges also, especially on a clear day when there are no fog and clouds.

Haat Kali temple and Patal Bhuwaneshwar caves

Gangolihat is mainly famous for Haat Kali (Goddess Durga) temple and Patal Bhuwaneshwar caves. Haat Kali temple is a Shaktipeeth and due to this, it is worshipped by devotees coming from all over our country.

Patal Bhuwaneshwar is an assemblage of underground caves at a depth of about 30-35 meters and is extending about 160 meters laterally. The movement of people to these caves are controlled by the district administration and are opened to public and tourists during the daytime only.

Patal Bhuwaneshwar caves are situated near a village called Bhuwaneshwar in Gangolihat area. It is about 12 Km from Gangolihat town. One has to enter in the caves from its mouth and just after that there is a steep descent in which one has to almost slide and walk down to reach the cave interior which is very spacious and contains many natural compartments. The local administration has provided a strong chain fixed on the wall alongside the descent to caves so that one does not stumble or slip down.

When one enters the caves one finds it really mesmerising and exciting. It is moderately cooler inside the caves and drops of water can be found oozing or falling from the cave roof as well as walls at places. Cave walls everywhere are having different shapes of rocks and appear as if someone has sculptured on the rocks which are forming the cave walls here and there. These rocks are basically a natural limestone geological deposition and were formed due to leaching phenomenon by percolating waters inside the rocks and there are many such caves in our country as well as across the world at different places.
The Patal Bhuwaneshwar caves are well illuminated with electric lights and after visiting them one has to come out by climbing up the same path holding the side chain for safety. It is really a fantastic and unique place in the hilly state of Uttarakhand.
