About GopalpurGopalpur is a town in Ganjam district in the state of Odisha. It is a famous sea beach along the coast of Bay of Bengal. Now it is a tourist destination just 16km away from Berhampur.
Not densely populated, Gopalpur has a population of 8000 with Male and female population equally constituting 50% of the population. The literacy rate is recorded at 51% which is lower than the national average of 59.5%.
As already mentioned, it has a popular and beautiful sandy beach in the state of Odisha. The blue waters of the sea make a difference to the viewers with clusters of coconut and palm trees and white sand dunes overgrown with Casuarinas plantations. This place has the history dating back to the days of Kalingas as it was known as the port of Paloura from which traders of silk and pearl sailed as far as Java, Bali and Sumatra. It was a trading point for rice from Rangoon. The later years made it a transit point to export sugar and cheap laborers for the tea gardens of Assam in north eastern India.

The long stretch of cashew nut trees not only serve as a source of beautiful scenery but the Cashew nuts are processed here and exported are the main source of economy for this place.
Tourist places aroundA very interesting spot to visit is the Melancholy and Salubrious Sea beach. The blue waters, attractive water bed and the lagoon with canopies of lush green flora and fauna. The residual remains of British made port buildings remind the golden past of Southern Orissa from where ships were sailing to Rangoon.
A major landmark of Gopalpur-on-Sea is its lighthouse from where one can see at a glance the entire town of Gopalpur. The view from the top would be a scintillating experience. The Beach festival organized annually in this town attracts thousands of visitors. Dhabaleshwar temple is another pilgrim place located here.
Transport facilitiesIt is well connected by the various modes of transportation.The nearest airport is at Bhubaneswar, 180 km from Gopalpur-on-sea. The nearest rail station is Berhampur which is just 16 km away on the Kolkata-Chennai line. One can drive in to Gopalpur-on-sea from Berhampur which lies on National Highway. Buses and taxis ply regularly from Berhampur to Gopalpur.
