    Ratnagiri a district which lies in the Konkan coast and 400 kilometers away from the Mumbai city the capital of Maharashtra. The areas surrounding this district are Arabian Sea, on the west, Sindhudurg district on the south, Satara, Sangli, Kolhapur districts on the east, Raigarh district on the north.

    Ratnagiri ,the port town is the administrative headquarters of the district. This district has also the distinction of being the native place of three Bharat Ratna awardees, namely Maharishi Karve, Dr. Pandurang Vaman Kane and Dr.B.R. Ambedkar. The town Ratnagiri is also known for being the the birth place of Lokmanya Tilak.

    Ratnagiri district has 9 taluks, namely Mandangad, Dapoli, Khed, Chiplun, Guhagar, Sangameshwar, Ratnagiri, Lanja and Rajapur and 5 assembly constituencies after delimitation, namely Rajapur, Ratnagiri, Guhagar, Chiplun, and Dapoli.

    Languages spoken in the district are Konkani and Marathi and has a population of 16,96,777 as per the 2001 census details. Rice an d coconut are the main crops and the best time to visit will be in summer April - June and after the rains October to December.

    Places worth seeing in Ratnagiri

    The places worth seeing in the town are Ratnadurg fort, Lighthouse, Gitabhavan, an aquarium, a college of pisciculture, Thiba palace, an aerodrome , a radio station, and a television transmission center.

    Nearby at Mirjole there is an industrial estate.
    Tourist places in the area are the beaches as it has a beautiful coast line and there are two beaches on either side of the Ratnadurg fort, one of pure white sand and other of black sand. This has to be seen to be believed.

    How to reach Ratnagiri

    The nearest airport situated in the district headquarters in the Ratnagiri town and the nearest railway station is Kolhapur.
    Via NH 17 you can use the road transport also to reach Ratnagiri. The district is well connected by the Road transport and it is connected to all the major towns and cities of Maharashtra and Goa.
