    Krishna district was formed in December 1759 under the order of Mr.john Andrew's Government. It is one of the oldest british administered areas of Andhra Pradesh. It was formerly called Machilipatnam district and in 1859 when the then Guntur district was abolished, certain taluks was added to this district and was renamed as Krishna district, after the mighty river 'Krishna'. Krishna district is the third most thickly populated district with 42,18,416(2001) in A.P. after the East Godavari and Guntur Districts.

    Krishna district is the third most thickly populated district in A.P. after East Godavari and Guntur districts. There are 4 parliamentry and 17 constituencies in Krishna District. There are 4 Municipalities and 1 Municipal Corporation(Vijayawada), 50 Mandals, 49 Mandal Parishads and 2270 primary schools in this district. Krishna district has recorded a literacy rate of 70.03%. It is well advanced in the field of education.

    Krishna district is bounded by West Godavari district in the rast , Bay of Bengal in the south, Guntur and Nalgonda disticts in the west and the khammam district in the North.

    Important cities of krishna district are Vijayawada, Machilipatnam, Gudivada, Nuzivedu, Jaggaiahpet, Vuyyur, Avanigadda, Kaikalur.

    Vijayawada was once known as Bezawada. The present name is derived from the presiding deity, Kanakdurga also called Vijaya. It is the second biggest city in Andhra Pradesh next to Hyderabad.It is located on the shore of river 'Krishna'. It is considered the heart of the state. It is also a leading commercial centre. Vijayawda also has the biggest fruit market in Asia.

    From this district hailed many great patriots like Gadicharla Harisarvothama rao, Ayyadevera Kaleswara Rao, Gollapudi Seetharama Sastry who participated in the National movement. One of the incidents which carved a place in the history of Vijayawada was Mahatma Ghandhiji's visit in 1933. He enabled Harijans to enter the temples and also established schools and hostels for them. Though Vijayawada was a small town till early 20th century, the AICC meeting during freedom struggle(1921) drew the attention of the entire country.

    Rivers : The cheif rivers of the district are Krishna , Muniyeru ,the Tammileru and Budameru. These rivers support the agricultural needs of the district.

    Hills : The main hill range of the district is known as Kondapalli which runs between Nandigama and Vijayawada with a length of about 24 kms. It is famous for Kondapalli Toys. The other important hills are Mogalrajapuram, Jammalavaoidurgam and Indrakiladri hills. On the Indrakiladri hill at Vijayawada lies the famous temple of kanakadurga.

    Agriculture and Industries : The district occupies an important place in agriculture which is the most important occupation. Paddy, Maize, Greengram, Blackgram, sugarcane, Turmeric and Ground nut are the crops cultivated in this district.The main Industries are cement, sugar and soap.

    Thermal power station at Ibrahimpatnam has gained prominence not only in Andhra Pradesh but also throughout india.

    Transportation and Communication : Vijayawada city is the largest commercial centre of the district and also there is an important railway junction connected to Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai, Hubli, Gudivada and Machalipatnam. It has an aerodrome at Gannavaram and a minor sea port at Machalipatnam. The second largest bus station complex in the state i located in Vijayawada.

    Tourism : There re several places of worth seeing in this district. Some of them are Kanakaduraga Temple, Prakasam barrage, Hazrat Bal Mosque , Gandhi Hill, Koleru Lake, Gundala Matha Shrine, Kondapalli, Kuchipudi, Manginapudi beach. Vijayawada is a web of 85 temples.

    Prakasam Barrage : This Barrage which connects Krishna and Guntur districts, is at the feet of Indrakiladri hill. This was constructed in 1852. After Independence it was named s Prakasam Barrage after Sri Tanguturi Prakasam Pantulu, the first cheif minister of Andhra State.

    Ghantasala is one of the ancient Buddhist sites of Andhra Pradesh. Kuchipudi is the birth place of Siddhendra Yogi, the originator of Kuchipudi dance form, famous throughout the world. Kolleru lake is a great picnic spot for bird watchers and nature lovers.

    Apart from these, there are several Buddhist sites like Amaravathi, Ghantasala, Guntupalli, Chinna Ganjam, Bhattiprolu, Goli near Vijayawada. Many stupas and viharas were built during satavahana and salivahana dynasties.
