    Introduction

    Champawat is one of the districts of Uttarakhand state. It is connected to and situated on the southern side of Almora and Pithoragarh districts. Nainital district is connected to its west side while Udham Singh Nagar district is in its southern side. On its eastern side, it is having Indo-Nepal boundary along which Sharda river (known as Mahakali in Nepal area) flows.

    Champawat district was formed in the year 1997. It is at an altitude of 1610 m from sea level and as per 2011 census, it has a population of 2.6 lakhs. The literacy rate is 71% and main languages spoken in the area are Hindi and Kumauni. History describes it as the capital city of Chand rulers in this part of our country. The famous hunter Jim Corbett came to this region in the first decade of the twentieth century to hunt for man-eating tigers. His first book 'Man-eaters of Kumaon' is related to Champawat.

    Places of Interest

    Champawat is having picturesque landscapes of terraced fields and a breathtaking view of Himalayan peaks. For those interested in exploring the beauty of nature Champawat provides forests full of trees of Teak, Babool, Eucalyptus, Saigon and Jamun.

    Champawat has kept some of its 10th-century old traditions intact and same are still followed by the people with full interest. There are many temples in Champawat. Some of them in and around the Champawat town are - Kranteshwar Mahadev temple (6 Km), Baleshwar temple (0.5 Km), Nagnath temple (0.5 Km) and Gwal (Golu) Devta temple (4 Km).

    There are many places of attraction in Champawat district which the tourists can visit. Some of them are as follows -
    • Reetha Sahib (70 Km) the famous Sikh pilgrim place which is located in a tiny hamlet called Dyuri.

    • Bansaur ka Kila (fort) (7 Km) which is a medieval-era fort built in the memory of Bansaur the son of mythological king Bali who was killed by Lord Krishna. From here the landscape is awe inspiring.

    • Abbott Mount church (20 Km) is an old rustic church built by Britishers long back when they were camping in these serene hills.

    • Mayawati Ashram (9 Km) is a place where spiritualists from all over the world are attracted.

    • Shyama la Tal (lake) (56 Km) is a beautiful place for the picnic. There is a lake covering an area of 1.5 sq. Km. The famous Swami Vivekananda ashram is in this area.

    • Purnagiri Temple (92 Km) is the famous Hindu sacred shrine atop Purnagiri hills. Large number of devotees visit here.

    • Devidhura (45 Km) a charming place known for Varahi temple. Jim Corbett's tale 'Temple tiger' is associated with this place.

    • Pancheshwar Dam (40 Km) which is a rock-filled dam and is under construction on river Sharda (this river is at the boundary of India and Nepal and is called Mahakali in the Nepal area).

    • Rafting in Saryu river in Tanakpur town in Champawat district.

    • Lohaghat (13 Km) which a nearby town and is as picturesque as Champawat town.

    Educational facilities

    There are two Govt Degree Colleges, one in Champawat town and other at Tanakpur town in Champawat district. Another college in Champawat town is Devbhumi College of Education, for BEd. Also, there is one Government PG College at Lohaghat town in Champawat district. All the above colleges are affiliated to Kumaun University, Nainital.

    For school education, there are many Govt as well as private schools in Champawat district.

    How to reach there

    Champawat is well connected by roads to the nearest towns and district headquarters. The nearest Railway station is Tanakpur town ( 75 Km). The nearest airport is at Pantnagar, Nainital.
