Tehri Garhwal (commonly known as Tehri) is one of the important districts of Garhwal region in the state of Uttarakhand.

The old Tehri city was in fact relocated 16 Km further, to new Tehri city, due to submerging of the old city in the Tehri dam. Historically, the old Tehri city was established by Raja Sudarshan Shah with the help of East India Company in the year 1815 after expulsion of Gurkha rule. The historical buildings and temples of old Tehri city are all submerged in the big lake created by the Tehri dam.

Tehri dam is Asia's tallest dam (260.5 m) and is built at the confluence of rivers Bhagirathi and Bhilangana. It is the fourth tallest rockfill dam in the world and the lake is sprawling over an area of 45 sq. kms in the Bhagirathi and Bhilangana valleys. The new Tehri town is facing this lake. There was opposition from environmental activists and local political groups for construction of this dam but seeing the requirement of hydroelectric power of the country, Govt took a decision to go ahead and the dam was completed in the year 2006.

The present town of Tehri at an altitude of 1676 meters is on the route to famous pilgrim places Kedarnath, Badrinath, Yamunotri and Gangotri.

The Tehri district is having an area of 4085 sq. km. and a population of about 6.2 lakh as per 2011 census. The literacy rate is 67%.

There are many places of interest in and around Tehri for tourists or nature lovers. Some of these places are Dhanaulti, Dev Prayag, Chamba, Tehri dam, Surkhanda Devi temple, Nagtibba, Khatling Glacier etc.

Tehri is well connected with roads to nearby towns of Rishikesh, Dehradun, Narendranagar etc. The nearest Railway station is in Dehradun and the nearest airport is in Jollygrant, Dehradun.
