Anantnag, also known as Islamabad of Kashmir, is one the six Lok Sabha constituencies in the state of Jammu & Kashmir. Anantnag region is the rice bowl of the Kashmir valley. It has a glorious past because of its scenic beauty which attracted foreign tourists. But the militancy and terrorist insurgency badly affected the tourism industry here.
The total number of electorates in this constituency is around 475767. This constituency is going for polls on 17th April 2014 and the counting would be taken up on 16th May along with other constituencies in the country.
Trai, Pampore, Pulvama, Rajpora, Wachi, Shopian, Norabad, Kolagam, Homshalibug, Anantnag, Devsar, Doru, Kokarnag, Shangaj, Bijbehra and Oahalgam are the assembly segments in the Anantnag constituency.
At previous elections
Md.Shafi Qureshi of the Congress party was unanimously elected to the Lok Sabha from Anantnag in 1967. He continued as MP for three successive terms and National conference party first time bagged the seat in 1980 general elections. In 1996, Janata Dal won this seat while the 1998 mid-term polls went in favour of the Congress. But, National conference party regained the seat in 1999 while Progressive Democratic Party, a break way group of the congress led by Mufti Mohammed Syed won this seat in 2004. The National conference defeated PDP in the 2009 General elections and bagged the seat once again.
List of the representatives of the Anantnag Lok Sabha is as under:
1967-1980 - Md.Shafi Qureshi, INC
1980-1984 - GH Rasool Khosak,National Conference
1984-1989 - Akbar Jahan begum, National conference
P1989-1996 - P L Handoo, National Conference

1998-1999 - Mufti Mohammed Syed, INC
1999-2004 - Ali Ahemmed Naik, National Conference
2004-09 - Dr.Mehabooba Mufti, PDP
2009-14 - Mirza Mahaboob Beg, National Conference
Profile of the current MP
Dr.Mirza Mehboob Beg is the sitting MP from this constituency. He is the son of the former Dy. Chief Minister of J&K. A doctor by profession, Mehaboob Beg served as member of Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly for two terms during 1983-1987 and 2002–2008 and also as a member of Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Council during March 2009 to May 2009. He has undertaken various developmental activities in this region.
Possible scenario in 2014 elections
The former Dy. Chief Minister of J&K Dr. Mehabooba Mufti is the PDP nominee and a strong contender in this constituency. She is the daughter of the former Chief Minister and founder president of PDP Dr.Mufti Mohmmed Syed. When Syed was the Union Home Minister, Dr.Mahabooba was abducted by the militants of J&K in the nineties and she was secured safely after clearing the ransom. She won the Lok sabha elections in 2004 but lost to the National Conference candidate Mirza Mahaboob Beg by a margin of 25000 votes in 2009. Apart from these two candidates, BJP and AAP are also in the fray. As a part of seat-sharing adjustment, Congress has not fielded its nominee and extending support to National conference. This time BJP is giving a tough fight and the anti-incumbency factor may help BJP to split the votes. Former PDP leader and social activist Maqbool Dar is fighting with the rivals as AAP nominee. Thus, Anantnag is witnessing a keen contest among all the contestants. Observers say that Dr.Mahabooba Mufti of PDP or Ahmed Malik of BJP have bright chances to win the election.
