The elected representatives of the Udhampur constituency
This constituency went for polls for the first time in 1967 and Dr.Karan Singh of the Indian National Congress won the election. It became a stronghold for Congress party till BJP started its innings in 1996 recording three consecutive victories. The Members of Parliament who represented the constituency are as under:
1967-80 – Dr.Karan Singh , Indian National Congress
1980-89 – G.L.Dogra, Indian National Congress
1989-1996 – Dharampal Sharma, Indian National Congress
1996-2004 – Chamanlal Gupta, BJP
2004-2014 – Chaudary Lal Singh, Indian National Congress
Poll prospects of the candidates in elections 2014
The sitting MP Chaudary Lal singh was denied ticket by the congress due to allegations of land grabbing and other courrption charges. The party fielded the Union Minister Gulam Nabhi Azad so that the vote bank is secured due to his experience as the Chief Minister of J&K.
As a part of seat-sharing arrangement with its , National Conference has not fielded its candidate and extending support to Congress. BJP has nominated a political novice Dr.Jitender Singh and relying on the image of Modi that is swinging the country. However, the three time MP Chaman lal Gupta became a rebel to BJP and nominated his son Anil to contest as an Independent. Thus, the BJP vote bank is likely to get split. Pathers Party's chief Bhim Singh may also play a spoiler game for Congress. This has become crucial for both Congress and BJP. Political observers say that PDP is slowly gaining in this region because of the diversified political equations and Azad is facing a tough time here.
Polling for this constituency would be held on 17th April 2014 and counting would take place on 16th May. List of candidates for the General Elections 2014 for Srinagar Lok Sabha constituency:
Dr.Jitender Singh– BJP
Gulam Nabhi Azad – Indian National Congress
Arshad Malik –Peoples' Democratic Party
Amrit Varsha – Samajwadi Party
Dharam Pal Balgotra – Bahujan Samaj Party
