This constituency went for polls for the first time in 1971. Sanliana of the Mizo Union won the election. An independent by name Rothuma represented the constituency from 1997 to 1989 for a period of 12 years. Congress nominee Silvera got elected the 1991 and 1996 elections. It was held by MNF for a decade during 1999-2009. Congress regained the constituency in 2009 general elections.
Sitting MP Raula is again contesting as Congress nominee. The development undertaken by the UPA Government and the special package given to Mizoram may lead to a positive vote for Congress. AAP is also in the fray and corruption at national level is the core campaign issue for AAP. Lalmanzuala, an active member of the Anna team and a social activist is named as its nominee. BJP, Mizo Union and MNF formed together as United National Democratic Front and its candidate belonging to BJP Robert Romwala Royte, 37 year old MD of a software consultancy, is likely to give a serious fight to the sitting Congress MP.
Illegal migration from Bangladesh is the main problem highlighted by BJP and putting all out efforts to win the seat by projecting its Prime Ministerial candidate Narendra Modi. Congress focused on local issues. The grand alliance by name UDF included the parties like MNF, MPC, ZNP, MDF, NCP, HPC, PTC, and BJP to fight the Congress in the elections.
