Importance of Nainital-Udham Singh Nagar constituency and party prospects in elections
The picturesque town of Nainital is in the spotlight of the
2014 Lok Sabha General Elections
for a number of reasons.
For one thing, no less than royalty is occupying the current seat. KC Singh Baba is the present occupant of this constituency seat. The Member of Parliament from the Congress political party is a descendant of Kumaon's Chand rulers. Not that he got to the MP position due to his royal background. On the contrary, he started at the lower municipal ranks, as chairman of the municipal board of Kashipur. Ever since, he has been a winner at elections. The debut win was as an independent candidate in 1989 in Kashipur constituency & subsequently as a Congress candidate in 1996. This was followed by a third win in 2004, that time bagging the Nainital-Udham Singh Nagar constituency seat as well as in the last previous elections in 2009. Naturally, with such a wonderful winning streak, it is no surprise that the Congress party fielded him again for this year's elections.
Another reason for Nainital-Udham Singh Nagar being a major Lok Sabaha seat contest in the forthcoming elections is the presence of a prominent rival. The primary contender against Baba at this year's elections is none other than former Uttarakhand CM Bhagat Singh Koshiyari, the BJP party's candidate. This may be Koshiyari's first elections from this particular constituency, but his chances of defeating Baba cannot be so easily ruled out. After all, the locals are quite fed up of the steep rise in prices & the corruption factor that has plagued the Congress Govt. at the center. The BJP has left no stone unturned to ensure that Koshiyari reaches out directly to the locals through one-on-one contact rallies.
The BSP candidate Laiqat Ahmad fancies his chance of getting a good chunk of votes due to the fairly large presence of the minority population. The party thinks that since their leader Mayawati has a good votebank in the Dalits, her popularity will also increase among the minorities.
While the BSP candidate may not really be a threat, the AAP candidate Balli Singh Cheema could quite possibly eat into the vote bank of the constituency. Cheema has been credited as one of the main persons behind the push to make Uttarakhand an independent State. He does envision hopes of a win on the grounds that he is a farmer and will get huge support from the local Punjabi farmers. What's more, he is confident of full support from the Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU).
Major issues of this Constituency include the demand for better infrastructure. Also, migrant voters have been demanding for SC status. Due to these issues, although the Congress party has had a good stronghold here, BJP could well make inroads.
2009 Elections results: K. C. Singh Baba of INC party won with 321377, defeating Bachi Singh Rawat of the BJP party.
