Odisha which has historical importance is an Indian state that lies on the East coast. The state has rich culture and heritage with good number of ancient monuments like the Sun Temple at Konark which is the World Heritage site. There are six major rivers in the state and it has the worlds' longest dam which is known as the Hirakud Dam in the Sambalpur district.

Updated information about the state of Odisha:
Officially the English name Orissa has been changed to Odisha on November 4' 2011. Shri Naveen Patnaik, the founder President of the Biju Janat Dal is the current Chief Minister of Odisha.
The state of Odisha lies on the East coast of India along the Bay of Bengal on its East and it is bounded by the state of Madhya Pradesh on the West. It lies between the states of West Bengal in the North and Andhra Pradesh in the South. and with an approx area of 155,707 square kilometers.

which was formerly known as
Orissa
was formed as a separate province on April 1' 1936 and it was formed as a politically separate state on linguistic basis under the British rule. Every year April 1 is celebrated as
Odisha
formation day which is known as
Utkala Dibas.
Land and people
Based on the physio graphical characteristics, the state is divided into five major regions viz. the Coastal Plains of Odisha, the Middle Mountainous and Highlands of Odisha, the Central Plateau region of Odisha, the Western Rolling Uplands of Odisha and the region of Major Flood Plains.
The Coastal Plains of Odisha consist of several deltas that are formed by the major rivers of the state and hence this is the most fertile plain of the state. Due to the formation of deltas by six major rivers of the state, this is known as the 'Hexadeltic region' or the 'Gift of six rivers'. While the Central Plateau region is formed due to the erosion on the Western slopes of the Eastern Ghats. Broadly, there are two plateaus in the state viz. the Panposh - Keonjhar-Pallahara plateau and the Nabrangpur-Jeypore plateau.
The state has glorious past which dates back to 4th and 5th centuries BCE and was known with different names like
Kalinga Desa

Utkal
and
Odra Desa
. The capital city of Odisha is Bhubaneswar and the main language spoken in the state is
Odiya
. The major rivers flowing through the state are the Subarnarekha, the Budhabalanga, the Baitarani, the Brahmani, the Mahanadi and the Rusikulya. Around 22 per cent of the population constitutes the tribes of Odisha which is concentrated in the regions of Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Sundargarh and Koraput districts.
The state of Odisha is rich in virgin beaches with a coast stretch of 482 Km. The state with its ancient glory is endowed with nature's bounty which include the serpentine rivers, mighty waterfalls, the Eastern Ghats that are rich in flora and fauna. The ancient temple culture and architecture of Odisha is worth mentioning with its important temples of
Lord Jagannath temple at Puri
, Lingraj temple in Bhubaneswar, Tara Tarani temple near Brahmapur in Ganjam District and other important temples.
Ratha Yatra or the Car festival
is the most important festival of the state which is witnessed by lakhs of people and is shown live on the National Doordarshan channel and other important TV channels.
Sun temple located near Puri is one of the World Heritage sites where the dance festivals are held. Odissi dance is the classical dance form of the state which got international recognition through the noted personality Kelucharan Mahapatro.
Orissa is well known for its distinct art and craft works. The famous
Patta Chitra
of the state are the iconic paintings of Odisha which including wall painting. Sand art of Odisha is one of the unique art forms which earned world fame. Yet another ancient art form known as
Talapatra Chitra
or the palm leaf painting has earned popularly across due to its ethnicity.
Districts in Odisha
The state of Odisha comprises of 30 districts viz. Angul, Bargarh, Bhadrak, Balasore, Bolangir, Boudh, Cuttack, Deogarh, Dhenkanal, Gajapati, Ganjam, Jagatsinghpur, Jaipur, Jharsuguda, Kalahandi, Kondhmal, Kendrapara, Keonjhar, Khurda, Koraput, Malkangiri, Mayurbhanj, Nuapada, Nabarangpur, Nayagarh, Puri, Rayagada, Sambalpur, Subarnapur and Sundargarh.
Sambalpur district which lies on the North Western part of Odisha is renowned for its classical Sambalpuri dance and is all well reputed for the colorful hand woven textiles and Sambalpuri sarees which are woven with fast colors.
Tourist attractions
Odisha is famous for Lord Jagannath temple at Puri. Besides the temples there are good number of tourist attractions in the state.
Sun temple at Konark is the most population attraction of Odisha and is the World Heritage site. The magnificent temple architecture of this place dates back to the medieval period. The place is also known by the names Kona Aditya and Arka Kshetra
Tapta Pani or the hot water springs near Brahmapur in the Ganjam district is one of the important attractions of the place where people mostly visit in the months of Nov / Dec.
Nandan Kanan Zoo is located close to the capital city Bhubaneswar and is situated in Chandaka forest amidst the waters of Kanjia lake. It also has botanical gardens and a part of the zoo is declared as a sanctuary. White tigers which are one of the rarest species of tigers are hosted in this zoo. And the zoo is also famous for its breeding of black panthers and gharial crocodiles besides its breeding of white tigers.
Khandagiri and Udayagiri Caves - these are one of the earliest rock-cut temples that are located close to Bhubaneswar. Due to its magnificent engraving and cutting of rocks, these caves attract tourists.
Chilika Lake situated at Satpada is very famous for the migratory birds.
There is no dearth for tranquil beaches in Odisha. To name a few Gopalpur on Sea in the Ganjam District, Chandrabhaga near Puri and the Puri beach are mostly attracted by the tourists.
Dhaulagiri near Bhubaneswar is a famous Buddhist Peace Pagoda with an embossing structure. The temple is located on a hill named Dhauli which mainly depicts the writings of Asokan period in Prakrit and Brahmi lipi.
Hirakud Dam is the longest dam in the world which is located in the Sambalpur district and is at a distance of around 15 Km from Sambalpur city.
The state of Odisha has emerged as an industrial hub in recent times. For investors it has become as a major investment destination in the areas of Steel, Aluminum, Petrochemicals, Power, IT, food processing, tourism and other fields. Due to the presenece of abundant mineral resources, major industries were already established. The Rourkela Steel Plant, National Aluminum Company and National Thermal Power Corporation are well known for their contribution in the world market.
The JK Paper Mills ar Rayagada and Utkal Alumina are the other two important industries in South Odisha. The Paradip Port is one of the major ports in India. The prestigious Missile launching pad under ITR (Interim Test Range) belonging to DRDO is located at Balasore in Odisha.
