    History of Chikamagalur

    The Chikmagalur is regarded as one of the place with origin right from the time of Hoysalas, who ruled including this place in the south for more than two centuries, and in the later stage was in the hands of Hyderali and then to his son Tippu Sultan, and after his reign was over in the year 1799 the entire area was under the British rule and whole area was known as Kadur, later it changed to Chikmagalur.

    Chikmagalur means youngest daughter's town, as per the history this place was given as a form of dowry to the younger daughter of Rukmangada the then chief of Sakrepatna, and along with this place another place was given to his elder sister which was literally called as Hiremagalur means town belongs to elder daughter, now this place is the most famous place in the state for its scenic spots, with lush green with abundant coffee plantation hills, which is an unpolluted still so for, and the most attracted spot in the state by the visitors and travelers.

    The most rendezvous spot here is the highest peak in Karnataka that is ‘Mullayyana giri' which is having an height of around 6,300 ft above the sea level, the other attractions in this place are Kodandarama temple which symbolizes the Hoysala and Dravidian style of architecture and other attractions are Jamia Mosque, St. Joseph's Cathedral, which is famous for shell shaped portico, the 13th century Siddeswara temple, the cave of Nirvanaswamy at Thiruvanahalli and Lakshmikantha temple belongs to 17th century.

    Now this city has grown to an extent to call as an modern city with lot of trading centers and educational institutions, moreover this place has gained more importance as an tourist hub.

    This place is at an height of 1900 meters above the sea level with lush scenic beauty of green valley's, Baba Budangiri is important among them with its picturesque hills, green forests, steams and valleys with awesome waterfalls and historic and traditional temples and moreover this is the ideal place for trekking also.

    Chikmagalur is located in the south-eastern pa part in the state, it is 240 km away from the state capital Bangalore, 170 km away from coastal city Mangalore, 60 km from Hassan and 40 km from Kadur.

    This place will see monsoon from June to September will have sufficient rain as being the hill station and winter will be between December to February inspite it will have a very cool climate.

    But the best season to visit this place is October to April for sightseeing as this period being the vacation period, from June to September the beauty of this place will doubled as almost all waterfalls will be full and one can enjoy the beauty of the nature.

    September is an auspicious month here as Ganesha Chaturthi celebrations were grand here and October and November is the season of festivals and among them the important one here is Deepavali.

    If one likes to reach this place by air, the nearest airport is Bangalore International Airport which is 240 km away, taxi cabs are also available, other nearest airport is Mangalore airport which connects Bangalore and Chennai.

    Buses are available in plenty from all parts of the state, special deluxe luxury buses will ply from important places like Bangalore, Mysore, Mangalore, Hubli and ofcourse from Hassan.

    The picturesque beauty and most famous scenic spot here is Kemmanagundi this hill-station is around 55 km from northern part of Chikmagalur, 1,434 meters from the Bababudangiri hill station, which is 8 km away from Kemmanagundi, another spot to visit is Hebbe Falls, where the water cascades down a height of 168 m in two stages, and 10 km away is the Kalhatti Falls, gushing down from a height of 122 m. A local temple, built in a gap between rocks, can also be seen.

    Kudremukh This important and isolated hill-station, located around 95 km southwest from Chikmagalur, overlooks the Arabian Sea and is linked with deep valleys and steep cliffs.

    The most famous Amruthapura is located about 10 km away from Tarikere, this little town is famous for its temple which is 800 years old consecrated to Amrutheswara.
