The Chikmagalur is regarded as one of the place with origin right from the time of Hoysalas, who ruled including this place in the south for more than two centuries, and in the later stage was in the hands of Hyderali and then to his son Tippu Sultan, and after his reign was over in the year 1799 the entire area was under the British rule and whole area was known as Kadur, later it changed to Chikmagalur.
Chikmagalur means youngest daughter's town, as per the history this place was given as a form of dowry to the younger daughter of Rukmangada the then chief of Sakrepatna, and along with this place another place was given to his elder sister which was literally called as Hiremagalur means town belongs to elder daughter, now this place is the most famous place in the state for its scenic spots, with lush green with abundant coffee plantation hills, which is an unpolluted still so for, and the most attracted spot in the state by the visitors and travelers.
The most rendezvous spot here is the highest peak in Karnataka that is ‘Mullayyana giri' which is having an height of around 6,300 ft above the sea level, the other attractions in this place are Kodandarama temple which symbolizes the Hoysala and Dravidian style of architecture and other attractions are Jamia Mosque, St. Joseph's Cathedral, which is famous for shell shaped portico, the 13th century Siddeswara temple, the cave of Nirvanaswamy at Thiruvanahalli and Lakshmikantha temple belongs to 17th century.
