About Indian Institute of Technology


IIT Mumbai was formerly known as IIT Bombay or IITB. It was founded in 1958 with the financial support of UNESCO. IITB is the second oldest technical institute in India. Now, it has grown into one of the best technical institutes in the world. The campus of IITB is spread over 550 acres of land in Powai, Mumbai, India. The functioning of the college was temporarily started at Worli in 1958 with the first academic batch of 100 students. The foundation stone for the current building in Powai was laid by Jawaharlal Nehru in 1959. The IIT Mumbai campus surroundings are blessed with natural beauty. The Sanjay Gandhi National Park and the Powai lake are in the vicinity of the campus. The IIT Mumbai campus houses 2 schools - Kendriya vidyalaya & IIT campus school. IIT Mumbai has started a business incubator named Society for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (SINE) to support & promote early stage entrepreneurial ventures.

Facilities in IIT Bombay


IITB is a fully residential institute. The students are accommodated in14 hostels(12 for boys & 2 for girls)in the campus. Separate accommodation available for married students. Most of the faculties also live on campus in IIT quarters. IIT Mumbai is a township with most of the facilities available in the the campus including Bank, School & Hospital. There are many small food corners inside and outside the campus serving North Indian, South India & Chinese foods. There is a lecture theatre, Open air theatre & Convocation hall in the campus.

Location


The IIT Mumbai campus is located in Powai in the north-eastern part of Mumbai. Powai is 28 Kms away from Bombay (Mumbai) city. The nearest railway stations to Powai are Andheri, Bandra, Goregaon, Malad, Kanjur Marg, Vikhroli, Ghatkopar. Those who come by train have to get down at any of these stations and get a Bus,Taxi or Auto to IIT. The international flights land at Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport (Formerly,Sahar International airport) which is just 7 kms from the campus. The domestic airport is Santa Cruz which is 10 Kms from the IITB.
