About Government College Kottayam
Government College Kottayam is an Arts and Science College affiliated to Mahatma Gandhi University and is run by Government of Kerala. This college was established on 1972.This college was accredited on B Grade by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC).
This college is located in Nattakom, Kottayam District, Kerala.
Government College Kottayam was started in the year 1972, inaugurated by Sri C Achuthamenon and is the only government college offering arts and science streams in the Kottayam district of Kerala. It is affiliated to Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam and works under the management of the Department of Collegiate Education, Government of Kerala.
It is re-accredited in 2016 with ‘A' grade by NAAC and is recognized by UGC under the 2(f) and 12(B) schedules. Currently, it is offering 10 graduation level and 5 masters level courses and also has research facilities in the campus.
The college was initially started in a rented building and shifted to its own building in 1974 occupying around 15.5 acres of land. It got the title of “Research Centre" in 2000 with the start of Ph.D. programs in Economics stream.
Infrastructure and facilitiesThe College is spread over an area of 5.5 acres of land on the external part of Kottayam. The campus has all the facilities including a library, classrooms with advanced digital facilities, seminar hall, laboratories, language and bioinformatics labs, geological museum and Sophisticated Analysis and Instrumentation Center. Apart from these, the campus also has an aquarium house, gymnasium, EDUSAT Center and community college. A research chamber is there for the research students and a computer lab with internet center is available for all the students to get benefited from the resources available online. The students can avail the hostel facility within the campus as there are separate hostel facilities for both boys and girls. There is a canteen offering hygienic food for students and staff at very reasonable rates.
To manage physical fitness, a health club is available on the campus. A playground, basketball court, volleyball court, etc are also there.
Special programsThe college has also launched new programs as per the Department of Collegiate Education such as Additional Skills Acquisition Programme (ASAP), Scholar Support Programme (SSP), Walk with a Scholar (WWS) and Community College Programme. ASAP is focused on providing the skills for better employment to the students and the programme includes various skill-based courses and students are allowed to choose as per their interest. WWS is started with an aim to provide the required guidance in forming the career of the students. Students can learn how to search for job opportunities and how to achieve them through this programme. SSP is simply a kind of additional teaching programme in which the students get coaching for the subjects they are weak. - Padmini
