About Poona College of Pharmacy
Dr. Patangrao Kadam started Poona College of Pharmacy in 1981. It is the Pioneer College of Pharmacy in University of Pune and it was started when there was no Pharmacy College in this area. This grant-in-aid college in a span of 22 years has grown into an institute which provides B.Pharm., M.Pharm. in 5 specialization and Ph.D. programmes in pharmaceutical sciences. It is recognized by all the apex bodies controlling education in India i.e. Pharmacy Council of India, All India Council for Technical Education and University Grants Commission. The National Board of Accreditation of AICTE has awarded 'A' Grade to this college in recognition of its excellent infrastructure, faculty, Research and Collaborations with Pharmaceutical Industries. It is the only Pharmacy College in University of Pune and in this region which got itself accredited.
Since July, 2000, this college has become a constituent college of the Bharati Vidyapeeth University. This change has given full academic autonomy to the college. One of the biggest drawbacks of the conventional Universities is the time frame required for restructuring of syllabi. The entire process, from calling of Board of Studies meeting, to final passing of the syllabi by Academic Council may require upto 12 months. However since this college is a constituent unit of Bharati Vidyapeeth University, we can introduce a new programme within 3 months despite following the same procedure as any other University .
This kind of academic freedom has geared up us to introduce new courses/concepts. To mention one of them is the concept of an elective at the final year B.Pharm. and electives for M.Pharm. which are decided on the basis of the current trends, need of pharmaceutical industry and society.
