About Nowrosjee Wadia College
Started way back in 1932, Modern Education Society's Nowrosjee Wadia College caters to the junior college (XI & XII) and Senior College (Graduation and Post Graduation) in the science and arts stream. The College offers postgraduate courses in Arts (Economics and English) and in several subjects in Science (Physical Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Polymer Science, Physics, Petroleum Technology and Computer Science) leading to the M.A., M.Sc. and M.C.S. degrees of the University of Pune. The college also offers M. Phil. and Ph.D. degrees in English, Economics, Physics, Chemistry, Geology and Zoology.
The history of the college is as old as 1932 when it was started on 21st July by the efforts of Modern Education Society. It offers quality education to both boys and girls mostly from the eastern part of the Pune city. Since 1932, the college is performing excellently and has also received “The Best College in the Urban Area Award" by the University of Pune in 2002 and was accredited by NAAC with the “A" grade in 2003. Currently, it is holding A+ grade as recently accreditated with 3.51 CGPA.
InfrastructureThe college campus is located in the center of the city and is more like a township as it has retained its natural plantations. The campus is well connected with other nearby areas of the city and offering a good environment for studies.
The main library was started in 1932 and is having a collection of more than 150,000 books on various subjects. The Dewey Decimal Classification System is in use for the arrangement and classification of the books. It also has subscriptions of different magazines and journals. A big reading hall is there in the library with a seating capacity of around 300 students at a time and students can use this facility from 8.00 AM till 5.30 PM on all working days. Apart from the main library, the college also has a Postgraduate library (located in the postgraduate building) and separate departmental libraries that are managed by their respective head of the departments.
A well equipped Gymkhana is an additional asset of the college. It has all the facilities for various sports activities and includes a playground with a vast area of around 46000 square meters. It also has separate courts for Basketball, Volleyball, Kabaddi, Table tennis, Badminton and Kho-Kho. Tracks and fields for Running, Hockey, Cricket and Football are also available on the campus. The students get all the required support and guidance from the college and that is the reason the college has achieved a lot in the field of sports along with academics.
There are two halls or Auditoriums in the college - Tata Assembly Hall and a Seminar hall. The first one is capable of accommodating around 700 people and is mostly used for organizing various cultural and social events. It is also used for conducting exams and conferences throughout the year. The seminar hall, situated in the postgraduate building, is very well designed and equipped for the purpose of conducting various guest lectures and workshops.
Accommodation and foodThe college also offers accommodation facilities for girls as well as boy students within the campus. The hostels have 8 floors including the ground floor which has facilities for parking, power room, security cabin and common toilet. The rooms are spacious and are having attached toilet and bathroom facilities. Each hostel can accommodate more than 300 students and are managed by wardens and their assistants. The hostels have mess facilities. Students can have breakfast, lunch and dinner in the mess but are not allowed to cook.
A canteen is there on the campus offering delicious and hygienic food to the students and staff. It is quite spacious and offers a variety of refreshments throughout the day. - Padmini
