About Jalpaiguri Government Engineering College
Jalpaiguri Government Engineering College, also nicknamed as JGEC, is a prestigious engineering college offering quality education in the state of West Bengal. The college is 2 km from Jalpaiguri town and near to National Highway-27. Jalpaiguri, an important town and the divisional headquarters for the eight North Bengal districts, is well connected by rail, road and air. The nearest railway stations are Jalpaiguri Road and Jalpaiguri Town. Siliguri, another important city in North Bengal, is around 40 km from the college. The nearest airport to Jalpaiguri is Bagdogra airport in Siliguri.
Established in 1961, Jalpaiguri Government Engineering College is one of the oldest engineering colleges in West Bengal. The college was granted autonomy by the UGC in 2012 and since then it has been offering 6 undergraduate and 2 postgraduate courses. The courses are approved by the All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) and accredited by the NBA. The college is affiliated to Maulana Abul Kalam Azad University of Technology formerly the West Bengal University of Technology. The six disciplines in which the college offers undergraduate degree courses are Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, Computer Science, IT and Electronics & Communication. The postgraduate courses are on mechanical and electrical engineering. The college ranks high among the state-funded engineering colleges in West Bengal.
Infrastructure and resources Jalpaiguri Government Engineering College has a large campus measuring 165 acres. The campus is the largest amongst all government-engineering colleges in West Bengal. The campus is a high-tech one with LAN connectivity in every room of the college building and in the hostels as well. A wireless internet network that can be availed by the students even in their hostel rooms also serves the campus. The college has five hostels, called halls. Four of the hostels are for boys and one for girls. Residential accommodation is also available for the faculty and staff.
JGEC celebrates mainly two fests, the JECLAT (Social and Cultural Festival) and Sristi, which is a techno-management festival. During JECLAT, various kinds of cultural competitions like creative writing, wall painting, T-shirt painting, Sudoku, Damsheraz, dance, music, art, photography, quizzes, etc. are organized by the students, in addition to stage shows with musical nights. JECLAT has a great fan following and sees participation from neighbouring colleges too. Even renowned musical bands perform at this festival. Sristi, on the other hand, is more of a technical type with workshops, seminars and competitions, mainly on robotics, gaming, coding, hacking, tech quiz and so on.
The college has a number of clubs and organizations for the students to participate in. Some of the popular clubs are Magazine Club, Coder's Club, Trekking Club, Sports Club, Music Club, Dance Club, Drama Club and Photography Club. CFI or the Centre for Innovation gives the students the opportunity to take part in various innovative activities. Innovations, like a quadcopter and a flying model of a plane, have been built by the students themselves. CFI teams regularly participate in Tech fests at premier IITs and have bagged numerous prizes too.
Admissions at JGEC Admissions at this college are through the West Bengal Joint Engineering Exam (WBJEE). For M.Tech courses, the admissions are mainly through the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE). The selection of college and branches depends upon the ranking obtained by the candidate in WBJEE merit list. Being a government college, students belonging to SC, ST and PwD category can avail of reservations. There are tuition fee waivers for poor meritorious students. - Dhruv
