About Government Post Graduate College
Government Postgraduate College, Jind began its academic odyssey in pursuit of excellence on 16 July, 1960 as Public College, Jind. It came to acquire its present mantle and name exactly one year after its inception, i.e. on 17 July, 1961, when it was taken over by the State Government. Ardently engaged in the pious task of serving the academic interest of the students of this historically rich but educationally and socially backward region of Haryana, this college, with the passage of time, has carved out a niche for itself in the academic world. The status of this college in the academic world can be adjudged from the very fact that NAAC has adjudged Govt P.G. College, Jind, as one of the four best Government Colleges in Haryana with a B+ grade.
This college was started as an Arts and Science College with a limited number of optional subjects. At present the college is a multi-faculty institution with facilities for teaching fourteen subjects (including non-conventional subjects like Mass Communication, Health and Physical Education, Statistics, Psychology, Philosophy, Sociology and Geography) in the Faculty of Arts, nine subjects (including the job-oriented subjects like Bio-Technology and Computer Science) in the Faculty of Science, and all the subjects in B.Com. (including Computer Applications) and BIM in the Faculty of Commerce. The UGC has approved the proposal of the college for starting three additional vocational courses in the Arts faculty, namely Functional English, Functional Hindi and Functional Sanskrit from the next session. The college also offers Postgraduate Degree Courses in Hindi, English, Economics and Commerce, and Honours Courses in English. At present, 2775 boys and 437 girls have taken admission in various courses run by this college. The Faculty of the college consists of ninety-four experienced and well-qualified lecturers. Thus, there exists an ideal Teacher-Taught ratio of 1:34 in this college. Besides, there are sixty-five highly-motivated, honest and hard-working members of the non-teaching staff.
The college came into existence in 1960 with the name public college, “Jind" as a result of the untiring efforts and long cherished desire of the people of this area. In 1961, it was taken over by the Govt. and came to be known as Govt. College, Jind. The college was shifted to a new spacious building on Jind Gohana road in January 1971. It has vast playground for various sports. It is affiliated to Kurukshetra university, Kurukshetra for ( Humanities, Science and Commerce) for B.A./B.Sc./B.Com & M.A.(Hindi, English, Economics) and M.Com. There are 3465 students (2885 boys and 580 girls) on its roll in the year 2008-2009. The strength of teaching staff is 99 including 27 women. It has a library having 71865 books and subscribes to 60 periodicals and journals
