About The Fisheries College and Research Institute
Fisheries College and Research Institute was established in the year 1977 at Thoothukudi. It is the second oldest fisheries college in India which offers B.F.Sc, M.F.Sc and Ph.D programmes in different fisheries related courses. Fisheries College and Research Institute is a co-education institution. The main aim of the institute is to develop the various sectors of fisheries through basic and applied research. The college is under the control of Tamil Nadu veterinary and Animal Sciences University (TANUVAS). The institute has well qualified and experienced faculty members.
Infrastructure The college has 4 campuses: Main campus, Shore laboratory campus, Staff quarters campus and the department of Coastal Aquaculture campus. The main campus has an Administrative block and large ventilated classrooms. The campus has separate conference hall, Examination hall and Audio visual hall. The institute has well equipped Central Instrumentation lab, E-learning lab and Computer lab. A glasshouse aquarium and a mother aquarium are also available inside the main campus. The college library has many books, magazines and journals related to fisheries science. A boy's hostel along with mess facilities for both UG and PG students is also available in the main campus. ATM, Playground, Indoor stadium with Gym and Table tennis facilities is also available for the students of FC&RI.
The Department of Fisheries Engineering, Fishing Technology and Fish processing technology are operating in the Shore campus. A fishing craft with outboard engine is used for conducting fishing related experiments and practical classes. The campus has many fishing related units and laboratories for biochemistry, microbiology and fish processing hall.
The Department of Coastal Aquaculture campus which is located at Tharuvaikulam has teaching and research facilities for culture of marine fin fishes and shrimps, aquaculture system and lobster fattening facility.
The Staff quarters campus has accommodation for both teaching and non-teaching faculties. A ladies hostel for both UG and PG students is also present inside the staff quarters campus.
Academics The institute provides educational programmes such as B.F.Sc., M.F.Sc., Ph.D., PG Diploma and certificate courses on Fisheries. B.F.Sc is a 4 year programme in Fisheries Science. Many departments are operating in the institute to provide education to the students in the various fields of fisheries.
