About East Calcutta Girl's college
East Calcutta Girls' College was established in 1992 at Lake Town in Kolkata. It took 14 years of planning and efforts to set up this college. Located adjacent to Lake Town Government Sponsored School, it is affiliated to West Bengal State University. During its formative years, it got generous funding from a women's welfare institution of Norway. Locals too, especially businessmen and industrialists played an important role in funding the college. With only 5 subjects to offer and a handful of students and teachers, East Calcutta Girls' College made a modest beginning. Over the years, it has now grown up into an undergraduate as well as postgraduate college. Meant exclusively for girl students, the college now has 17 departments with more than 1400 students in its roll. Other than its undergraduate courses in the arts, science and commerce streams, it now offers postgraduate courses in Geography and Education.
Facilities and infrastructure As for the facilities, the classrooms, library and laboratories at East Calcutta Girls' College are all ICT enabled. The college also provides the necessary infrastructure for differently-enabled students. Through the Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC), the students have access to a vast number of e-books and online publications. The students have access to a playground that helps keep them physically fit. Poor and meritorious students are provided with scholarships.
The college has a placement cell that provides the students with job-oriented training. The placement cell makes the students aware of career opportunities after graduation and postgraduation respectively. Placements have been provided to deserving students in organisations like Amazon, Global India and Just Dial. Students at this college also get experienced in community service by taking up regular participation in blood donation camps, which have been organised by the college for many years. Most of these camps are organised by the NSS unit of the college, membership for which is voluntary for the students.
