About Kalyani Government Engineering College

Kalyani Government Engineering College or KGEC, as it is popularly known by its students, faculty and the engineering fraternity in the state, is one of the best engineering colleges in West Bengal. A government college, established by the West Bengal government in 1995, it is completely autonomous and affiliated to MAKAUT or Maulana Abul Kalam University of Technology, formerly known by its erstwhile name, West Bengal University of Technology. KGEC is also one of the renowned engineering colleges in the country.

The college has a lush green campus situated on 75 acres of land on the northern fringes of University of Kalyani, another renowned university in the heart of West Bengal. Located amidst lots of greenery, the campus has a pollution-free surrounding. The college is located at a distance of around 60 km from Kolkata and is well connected by rail and road. The nearest railhead is Kalyani Station and local trains for Sealdah Railway Station in Kolkata are available round the clock. Buses and taxis are also easily available. Outstation students are provided with hostel facilities.


KGEC offers a number of courses, both undergraduate and postgraduate. With around 1700 students and ten departments, it offers a number of B.Tech and M.Tech programs, including an MCA. The faculty strength, number around 120 lecturers and 100 supporting staff, technical and non-technical included. The college has about 50 laboratories and 10 research facilities. After Jadavpur University in West Bengal, it is the second most popular college for engineering admissions in West Bengal. Admissions to the college are through the West Bengal Joint Entrance Exam (WBJEE).

The 10 departments at KGEC are CSE, ECE, IT, Electrical, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Application, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Humanities.

Infrastructure facilities

The college has well-maintained and modern infrastructure at its campus. It has smart classrooms, a fully-automated e-library, interactive conference room, well-equipped laboratories with LAN facilities. The central library has access to numerous e-books, e-journals, DVDs, CDROMs and Online Public Access Catalog (OPAC). Apart from the central library, every department has a dedicated library of its own.

Students at KGEC, as part of their academic training, get to attend many seminars, workshops, conferences and academic fairs. The students are provided with vocational training as part of placement services. The college has a separate Training & Placement Cell for this purpose. The focus of these services is to make every student at KGEC industry-ready when they pass out from this reputed institute. As such the institute has an excellent placement record, unmatched by most others in West Bengal. Students have been placed in top IT companies like Google, Microsoft, TCS, Cognizant, Hitachi, Infosys, Hexaware and many more. The students also get internships at reputed organizations like Indian Statistical Institute Kolkata, CSIR-Central Drug Research Institute, Siemens, TCS, IRCTC, Nearbuy and so on. The college also provides extensive scope for research. A number of research programs have been taken up by the college from time to time.

Apart from academics, the college has numerous facilities for sports and cultural activities. There are a number of clubs to pursue one's hobbies or to learn a new one. Fests and college festivals are organized at regular intervals. Students also get to take part in Hackathons and Coding competitions. Students have won accolades for their college in many such events.

Admissions at KGEC

Admission to the undergraduate courses in CSE, IT, Electrical, Mechanical and ECE are through the West Bengal Joint Entrance Exam (WBJEE). To get admission at this college, one has to obtain a fairly good ranking in WBJEE. Diploma holders too can apply through WB-JELET, the lateral entry mode of WBJEE. Diploma holders can take direct admission to the second year of the course.

The admission process for the postgraduate courses in the above five engineering streams is through the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE). Admission to the MCA program is through JECA, an acronym for West Bengal Joint Entrance Exam MCA. It is essential that you should have scored at least 60% marks in aggregate in B.Sc.
