Hooghly Mohsin College is one of the best and oldest colleges of West Bengal. It started its illustrious journey on 1st August, 1836 in the District of Hooghly of West Bengal. The college was built on the land donated by the famous philanthropist of the district, Haji Mohammad Mohsin. It was earlier known as New Hooghly College. On its hundredth anniversary, the college was renamed as Hooghly Mohsin College. This prestigious college is presently affiliated to Bardhaman University. Hooghly Mohsin College has been awarded B++ grade by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). Hooghly Mohsin College has been recognized by the University Grants Commission as a College with potential for excellence. The Department of Biotechnology, Government of India, has recognized it as a Star College. The Department of Science & Technology, Government of India, has selected this college under Fund for Improvement of Science & Technology Infrastructure scheme.

The Library contains many law journals and more than sixty thousand law books. It is completely digitized. National Service Scheme (NSS): NSS was launched by the then Union Education Minister Dr.V.K.R.V.Rao in September, 1969 during the Gandhi Centenary Year. Hostels: The college has four hostels for Under-Graduate and Post-Graduate students. Canteen: The canteen of the college provides hygienic food at subsidized rate. Library: The central library is fully digitised library with necessary books and journals helping the research work. In addition, every department has departmental library. Laboratories: The laboratories are well-maintained and well-furnished. The computer lab has modern amenities. Wi-fi: The entire college is wi-fi enabled. ScholarshipsThere are many scholarships for the meritorious students of the college. Some of these are: (a) Paramesh Chandra Mallik Award: Prizes, stipends are awarded on the basis of results of Graduation Degree Honours final examination to the examinees from the college securing the highest marks in each subject with a minimum of 60% of marks for Science subjects and 50% of marks for Arts and Commerce subjects. (b) Manjugopal Bhattacharya Award: Prizes and stipends are awarded to the examinees from the college securing highest marks in English Honours in Part I and Part II Honours examinations. (c) Benoy Krishna Modak Award: Prizes / Stipends are awarded to the examinees from this College securing highest marks in Mathematics in Part I Honours Final examination from the college. (d) Brojendra Nath Ghosh Physics Award: For the best student in the Under-Graduate Physics department.
