About Providence womens college Providence Women's College, Calicut, Kerala, is one of the oldest and the first all women's college in Malabar which was established by the sisters of Apostolic Carmel in the year 1952. Providence Women's College was established because of the sincere efforts of mother Veronica the founder of the congregation whose mission was to to educate young women, who had clinched to religious life and send them on vocations of service to the community. The college was then headed by Mother Gabrielle, who became the Founder Principal. This college was like a boon for the girl students of Malabar. The College has been the recipient of Best Women's College for several years. The college is registered under the Apostolic Carmel Education Society, S No.4 of 1957. The Governing Body of the college includes the Provincial Superior, Educational Secretary, the Principal, the Local Manager, a representative of the management and a religious staff who are nominated by the Provincial Superior. The college was first affiliated to the Madras University. Later the affiliation was changed to the Kerala University and then to the University of Calicut. The college has been serving humanity for over six decades. At Providence women's college, the students are emphasized on excellence in academics as well as extra - curricular activities by providing numerous opportunities for them to transform into an independent and responsible citizen. The college has all the facilities for expressing and polishing the skills of the students in various fields such as creative writing, oratory skills, fine arts and dance. The very active and talented students of the college have won several Trophies in the arts competitions at inter-zonal as well as zonal levels. The motto of the college is “In Thy Light We see Light". Every student of Providence Women's College will go out into the world bearing this light of knowledge and self - realization. The college campus is net enabled and the college library College Library is fully computerized and has a stock of over 49,000 volumes. It subscribes to 90 journals, periodicals and dailies. All students of the college are members of the Library and have free access to the books and volumes of periodicals. The library will be open on all college working days from 9.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m. Reading room will be open from 9 A.M to 5.P.M apart from the other books the library has a separate section which has a vast collection of standard text books in all subjects this section is maintained on grants from the University Grants Commission. The library has an attached reading room with seating capacity of 100 students. It contains various magazines and newspapers in English as well as regional languages. The Library is connected by LAN to all the sections and departments in the main block. The library also has an active UGC - INFLIBNET subscription. All the departments in the college are well developed and net enabled separate Informatics labs are also set up in the departments of Botany and Zoology. The departments also have separate libraries and clubs such as the nature club, Bhoomi thrasena club, Biodiversity club and Jalasree club. All the clubs are supported by the Govt. of Kerala) The college has an excellent and secure within the campus hostel that provides accommodation for degree as well as PG students.
