About St. Thomas College
|St. Thomas College was started in 1964 and is located outside the main city but is easily accessible from the main town- Ranni. The college was initially started as a junior college and in 1968, it got upgraded as a first-grade college and is currently offering various bachelor and postgraduate degree courses along with some conventional courses including tourism. It is affiliated to the Mahatma Gandhi University and is recently accredited by NAAC with grade ‘B'.|
FacilitiesThe college library is having a separate reading room with a reference section and students can use the library only after showing their identity card and a library card. The library is available from 9.00 AM till 4.30 PM on all working days. The library is having some very strict rules like students must not carry books or papers inside the general rack room and should not do any kind of writing work in the reading room. Students can borrow the books from general stock but not from the reference section and these books must be returned within 14 days period.
There are 3 conference halls in the college and are having all the required features in it. The seating capacity of these halls is around 50 (conference hall near the NCC room), 90 (conference hall near the Zoology department) and 180 (conference hall of commerce department).
The college is also having a Co-operative society for employees and is registered under the Government of Kerala. The management is taken care of by the college employees themselves.
A fitness centre with all the advanced equipment is available in the college. Students are allowed to use it on all the working days and the management of this fitness center is under the physical education department of the college.
For the purchase of all kinds of stationery items, there is a cooperative store inside the campus and students can even buy their textbooks from here. This store is also having a photocopying facility at subsidized rates.
Accommodation and FoodTo facilitate the accommodation of girls, the college has a separate women's hostel and the girls staying there need to follow the rules very strictly. Strangers are not allowed to enter the hostel and no girls can stay in the hostel during college hours on working days without prior permission. Mobile phones are not allowed in the hostel premises and girls can go outside on Wednesdays only.
Apart from the hostel mess, there is a cafeteria in the college offering hygienic and healthy food at reasonable rates for both students and staff.
ActivitiesThe college is conducting various activities apart from the regular academic curriculum. It includes NCC and NSS which are completely voluntary activities and students having interest can participate in the same. A Film Club, Music Club, Boomitrasena Club, etc are also there in the college. There are facilities for playing volleyball, football, basketball, Cricket, shuttle badminton, etc on the campus.
Vermi Compost Unit and Mushroom Cultivation are two separate activities that can be indulged by the botany students.
