About Vivekananda College for Women
Overview Established in 1961, Vivekananda College for Women is a UGC-recognized institution with affiliation to the University of Calcutta. Its NAAC Accreditation is Grade B++. In addition to 28 full-time faculties, there are 34 Government-approved part-time teachers and 42 college-appointed Guest Faculty. Qualified non-teaching staff and security staff have also been appointed as per the campus requirements.
Student-support services include scholarships for SC, ST, OBC Minority students as per a government scheme, Kanyasree Prakalpa (also a Government scheme), Freeship for students coming from the unorganized labour sector and a special remedial class.
A unique venture started by the college faculty is "Knowledge: A Multidisciplinary e-journal". This e-journal presents interdisciplinary writings, these being reviewed by eminent academicians from various disciplines. The journal is an electronic open access journal and is available for free to everyone to read.
Academics and allied activities The UG courses offered at Vivekananda College for Women include eight B.A, Hons. programs, two B.A. General programs, six B.Sc, Hons. programs, two B.Sc. General programs and a B.Com. course. At the Master's level, two courses are offered, namely in Geography and in Bengali (refer below for a complete list of all courses). Students can also enrol for M.Phil and PhD programs and are encouraged to work on research projects under the mentorship of PhD-qualified guides. For all disciplines, seminars and workshops are scheduled from time to time and educational study tours are organized. The college also has NSS and NCC units. Students participate in national level games and sports and the college has an annual sports event. The placement cell organizes free training courses towards helping students to get gainful employment and provides career counselling as well.
Infrastructure and facilities In an effort to preserve natural resources, the campus of Vivekananda College for Women has solar panels and rainwater harvesting facilities. An efficient management system for waste disposal is also in place, with biodegradable waste being decomposed and used as fertilizer in the garden.
Spread over 2000sq.ft. is the campus library, with two reading rooms and a seating capacity for 48 students at a time. Access to the over 30,000 books and more than 20 periodicals are given during the library hours from 8 a.m. to 5.15 p.m. There is a spacious common room for leisure activities, a games' room to enjoy table tennis and carom board and a small gym with exercise equipment. Additional infrastructure on the large campus is a seminar room, a medical room, a stationery store, etc. The campus canteen provides food at subsidized rates. The laboratories are equipped with the requisite instruments as well as with smart boards and projectors where required. At all times, qualified lab attendants are present to assist the instructors.
The Network Resource Centre at Vivekananda College for Women has received sponsorship from UGC for a few of the computers at the centre. In addition to providing basic computer knowledge, printing and scanning facilities, as well as CDs and DVDs. are also available at a low cost for the students. A qualified permanent computer trainer teaches the basics as well as gives training in programming and internet usage.
