About Sanatan Dharma College
Sanatan Dharma College, Ambala Cantt., popular among its students and teacher as SD College, has a glorious past. It was established in Lahore in 1916 by the leading Sanatan Dharma proponent of that era, Bharat Ratna Shri Madan Mohan Malviya Ji. However, the partition of the country saw the college getting relocated to Ambala in Haryana, India. The foundation stone for a new building in Ambala Cantt. in 1951 was laid by none other than the then Indian President Dr Rajendra Prasad. Ever since the college has been in the limelight, as over the years it has produced numerous distinguished personalities like Smt. Sushma Swaraj, Dr. NN Vohra, Shri Anil Vij, Nobel Laureate Dr. Abdus Salaa, to name a few.
Located on Jagadhari Road in Ambala Cantt., the college is easily accessible from all parts of the city. SD College is affiliated to Kurukshetra University, Haryana. It is NAAC accredited and has been mentioned as a ‘College with Potential for Excellence' by the UGC.
Academics The college primarily offers undergraduate programmes. They are offered in arts, science, commerce, computer applications and business administration. A few postgraduate programmes are also offered in the arts, commerce and science streams. Besides the UG and PG programmes, there are a number of add-ons, skill-oriented and UGC sponsored vocational courses for the students to undertake. Fee concession and scholarships Sanatan Dharma College offers numerous benefits such as fee concession and scholarships for its students. fee concessions are given mainly to the students who are financially poor, meritorious in studies or outstanding in sports/cultural activities. Girl students who have lost their fathers are also awarded fee concessions.
As for scholarships, both private and government scholarships are offered based on the financial needs and merit of the students.
The college has a unique Earn While You Learn facility for financially needy students. Through this novel scheme, needy students can work as assistants in the laboratories, college library and administrative office. This helps the students to earn some money and thus continue with their education.
Needy students can also avail the book bank facility. Under this scheme poor students are allocated with books, thus helping them to reduce their expenses.
Infrastructure facilities Sanatan Dharma College provides for numerous facilities. Apart from the usual classrooms, laboratories and library, the college has a healthcare facility and insurance scheme for its students. It has numerous avenues for a number of co-curricular activities. There is a large field for conducting various sports events.
There are also opportunities for the students to participate in NCC, NSS and Youth Red Cross. There are a number of clubs and the students can join one or more depending upon their interest and talent. Some of these clubs are Environment Club, Road Safety Club, Red Ribbon Club and Entrepreneurship Development Club, besides cells like Women Cell, Legal Literacy Cell, Anti-Ragging Cell and so on. - Dhruv
