About Gandhi Memorial National College
Established in 1948, Gandhi Memorial National College, popularly known as GMN College, is one of the top institutions for higher learning in Ambala, Haryana. Over the last seven decades, it has expanded immensely and today offers a range of undergraduate, postgraduate, diploma and short-term courses. These courses are in the arts, science and commerce streams. The college is affiliated with Kurukshetra University and the courses offered are approved by the UGC. It is located on Jawahar Lal Nehru Road and is quite close to the Ambala Cantt. Bus Stand. The campus is dotted with trees and lots of greenery.
Infrastructure and facilitiesThe college when it first began had an unimpressive building with a thatched roof. But as the years rolled by, the college focused on developing its infrastructure. As of today, it has every modern facility. There are separate blocks for the arts, commerce and science streams. The classrooms have smart class facilities, laboratories are well equipped, computers and internet connectivity is provided at every department and the library, which has a large stock of books is fully automated.
Apart from these, there is a high-tech seminar hall, e-library facility, gymnasium, and a vast sports field with facilities for most outdoor games. Extra-curricular events like dance, drama, quiz, poem recitation and cultural shows are organised quite often. Students get to participate in many inter-college, state level and national level competitions in sports as well as literary events.
Among other facilities, the college has an anti-ragging cell, placement cell, women cell, environment club and volunteer activities like NSS, NCC and Youth Red Cross. Educational tours, excursions, seminars, workshops and conferences are also organised by the college, department wise. The college has a dispensary for immediate relief, in case of medical urgencies.
Academics Apart from the usual undergraduate and postgraduate courses, Gandhi Memorial National College offers a number of certificate courses, diploma courses and advance diploma courses. The duration of these courses are more than 40 hours and are offered mainly in the arts and commerce streams. There are short-term courses on computer science and electronics as well.
Deserving and needy students are offered a number of scholarships, depending upon their academic performance and financial constraints. Both government and non-government scholarships are available. Some of these scholarships are need and category-based and some others are merit-based. An IGNOU study centre is located within the college campus, which offers distance education programmes to those, not in a position to attend regular college. - Dhruv
