|St. Joseph’s College, Darjeeling is the oldest and most famous college of Darjeeling. The College was established in 1888. In 1927, it was brought under the University of Calcutta. Since 1949, the College has started offering B.A and B.Sc. degrees. Since, 2006, the College has been offering M.A degree in English. In 1962, the College got affiliated to the North Bengal University. The children of royal families of Nepal and Bhutan study in this College. Famous film actor Danny Denzongpa, noted economist Mahendra P. Lama, microbiologist Jyoti Prakash Tamang are the noted alumni of this College.|
St. Joseph’s College, Darjeeling is a Catholic Minority Institution. It is managed by the Darjeeling Jesuits of North Bengal. It is a co-educational College. It is accredited by NAAC with Grade ‘A’. The motto of the College is ‘Sursum Corda’ (Lift up your heart). Apart from the regular academic courses, the students can take up many career-oriented add-on courses.
Facilities and infrastructureThe facilities offered by the College and the infrastructure are excellent, some of which are mentioned here. The Father John Whelan Library has more than 50,000 volumes and many professional journals. The Library caters to the needs of the students and also of many researchers of North Bengal. The Library is now completely digitized. The laboratories of Physics, Chemistry, Zoology, Botany, Geography and Computer Science are excellent and contain all necessary equipment. The students of Journalism get adequate opportunities in their respective professional work. Students in need of financial help can get the needed support. There is a counseling centre and a career guidance cell which are very helpful for the graduating students. The alumni association of the College also helps the students to find suitable jobs. In addition, the college has a Lab Assisted Personality Schooling (LAPS) which helps the students of the college to improve their language skills using the Language Laboratory. The students of the college can join the senior wing of NCC. There are many clubs like Film Club, Current Affairs Forum, IT Club, etc. in the College. The students are encouraged to take part in different sports and games activities.
There are two Hostels for the students of the College, viz., Xavier Hostel and Fairview Hostel with modern amenities for the hostelers. The college canteen is a good one and provides hygienic food and snacks.
