About Krishnath College
This college is affliated under University of Kalyani & was established in 1853
Krishnanath College was founded on 20th October 1853. The college was built with the assistance of landlords and other eminent people of the district of Murshidabad of Bengal. In 1903, the college was re-christened as Krishnanath College. The college is located at Baharampur, the district headquarter of Murshidabad district of West Bengal. The college has been a centre of excellence, many eminent personalities of Bengal have been associated with this college. It was one of the main seats of renaissance movement of Bengal. Presently, the college has more than three thousand students (both male and female). Both day and morning sections are functioning in the college. The college was the first to introduce commerce education in the district during the first half of 1960s. Even now, many new courses are being introduced in this college. Some of these courses are computer application, tourism & travel management, physiology, psychology and sericulture. In Post-Graduate level, the college teaches physiology, sericulture and Sanskrit. The college regularly conducts debate competition, football tournament, important seminars and lectures from eminent academicians.
Some of the famous students of the college are orientalist scholar Ramdas Sen, distinguished archaeologist Rakhal Das Banerjee (who discovered Indus valley civilization in Mahenjodaro) famous professors of history, Radha Kumud Mukherjee, eminent professor of economics, Radha Kamal Mukherjee, great philosopher Brajendranath Seal, eminent jurist Sir Rashbihari Ghosh, great Bengali poet Kalidas Roy, etc. The college still maintains its proud educational heritage. Earlier the college was affiliated to the University of Calcutta. Now, it is affiliated to Kalyani University. More than three thousand students are in the roll of this prestigious college.
The college provides following facilities: (a) The college has four well-maintained hostels, viz., Maharani Swarnamoyee Hostel for girls, New Coomar Hostel for boys, Maharaja Manindra Chandra Hostel for boys, Wheeler Hostel for Girls. (b) NCC: The NCC unit, affiliated to 9th Bengal Battalion NCC, is a vibrant hub of activity, sending up cadets regularly to national and state level camps. (c) NSS: The student volunteers of the NSS unit are engaged in various community development programmes and other camps organized by the parent body. (d) Gymnasium: A well-equipped multi-gymnasium for students and staff has been constructed with the assistance of Ministry of HRD, Govt. of India, and the UGC. (e) Distance education: The college houses study centres of the Netaji Subhas Open University and Rabindra Bharati University, offering distance education courses at various levels. Counselling programs are conducted in the college centre during weekends. (f) Computer education: A computer centre run by the Techno India group functions under direct supervision of the college authority. It is the only DOE approved centre in the district holding O, A and B level examinations. (g) Library: The college library contains more than 45,000 books of varied interests and more than 300 periodicals. (f) The college has fully operational placement cell. (g) College canteen: The canteen caters to the needs of the students.It provides hygienic food at subsidized rate.
