About St. Aloysius College
St. Aloysius College started in the year 1968 in Elthuruth as a first-grade college and got affiliated to the University of Calicut. Initially, the college was offering some Pre-degree courses but now has extended its course list with 16 Undergraduate and 8 Post Graduate courses. Currently, it has more than 80 members as teaching staff and around 32 people with admin. responsibilities. More than 2000 students are getting benefited by acquiring knowledge from this institute every year. It is accredited by NAAC and is affiliated to the University of Calicut.
Although the college is considered as a private one, it is supported by the Government of Kerala financially. The management of the school is taken care of by Fathers belonging to the Congregation of Carmelites of Mary Immaculate (CMI) founded by St. Kuriakose Elias Chavara.
Facilities St. Aloysius College has all the facilities which are required for proper learning and effective teaching. These facilities include well-set laboratories for chemistry, physics, psychology, computers, bioscience, etc. The chemistry lab is there to allow the students to perform experiments and learn the concepts. They are allowed to work in the lab under the guidance of teachers and lab assistants only.
A physics lab is there for both undergraduate and postgraduate students and is having the instruments required as per the syllabus. The main instruments include Kater's Pendulum, Fly Wheel, Spectrometer, Torsion Pendulum, Newton's Ring, Potentiometer and Magnetometer. Research students are also allowed to use instruments as per their requirements.
The Bioscience labs are three in number and are well equipped to be used by UG, PG and research students. This department also supports implementing the rooftop rainwater harvesting system.
The computer lab of the college is having more than 50 computers that are connected to different departments. Apart from these labs, there are language and psychology labs also in the college.
The hostel facility started in 2013 and the hostel is around a kilometer away from the main college building. It can accommodate more than 80 girls and the management is taken care of by the nuns of the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Martha.
Along with safe and secure accommodation, the college also has a canteen to offer a variety of hygienic food to students and staff.
Gemmology & Jewellery Designing Lab It is a unique feature of St. Aloysius College. It is an advanced laboratory dedicated to gemology and jewelry designing. It has all the equipment, instruments and other material like gemstone, stone polish, diamond, etc required for learning. The list includes Gemmoscopes, Digital microscopes with LCD screen, trinocular microscope, CVD Tester with stone, Diamond Stone washer, Presidium Electronic Gauge, etc. The students are taught about all the basics related to jewelry designing, diamond grading, clarity, cut of diamonds, and many more.
The Department of Vocational Studies is having a well-set Jewelry designing studio having sketching tables and computers with RhinoGold software which is used for jewelry designing. Students learn about the presentation of various jewelry stones in graphic mode, their different forms, surfaces, and related concepts. - Padmini
