About St. Berchmans College
St. Berchmans College, NAAC accredited A+, is a college with potential for excellence. The college was founded in 1922. It is now affiliated with Mahatma Gandhi University. The college won the R.Shankar award instituted by the state govt. for the best first grade college in Kerala. The motto of this college is ''CARITAS VERA NOBILITAS'', which means, charity is true nobility.
St. Berchmans College was started in the year 1922 with an aim to provide quality education in South India. Currently, it is offering various undergraduate, postgraduate and research-based courses. Some vocational and add-on courses are also available to support the professional requirements of the students. The college has got re-accredited with ‘A' Grade in 2017 by NAAC and is an autonomous college as declared by UGC in 2014.
Archdiocese of Changanacherry is managing the college and all the senior designations are honored by the people from Changanacherry only.
FacilitiesThe college is having a fully computerized central library with an excellent collection of books, magazines and journals. It also has an INFLIBNET facility for online learning and to access databases like EBSCOHOST. The working hours of the library are from 9.30 am to 4.30 pm with lunch break from 12.00-1.00 on all working days. Apart from this central library, the college also has a separate PG Library, digital library, management library and other department's libraries.
There are total seven hostels on the college campus, among which 6 are for men and 1 is for women. All the hostels are managed by their respective wardens and students are supposed to follow the rules strictly.
The college canteen is available for students as well as staff and is open on all working days. Apart from readymade snacks and soft drinks, people can have fresh and hygienic food at a reasonable price. There is an indoor stadium that can be used for events like indoor sports activities, organizing functions, etc. Theatre facility is available for students having an interest in theatre-related activity. There are 2 clubs, namely - Shakespeare Theatre and SB Theatre.
In 2007, a common instrumentation facility started to support the research scholars and teachers from the science field. This centre was built up with the support of UGC for education and research purposes.
B TV is a channel working in association with both the teaching and learning communities, forming small documentaries. It was started with the purpose of giving exposure on film direction and creative production to the students.
Other clubs and centresApart from the above-mentioned facilities, the college has various clubs and communities like staff co-operative society, Berchmans Counselling centre, International relations centre, Students parliament and union executive and many more. All these centres are focusing on their specific functions and helping in the smooth working of the institute.
One such unique centre is Gandhian Study Centre that started in 2002 and got recognized by UGC in 2008. It started with an aim to spread the teaching and philosophies of Gandhiji and students from any department can join this centre. The centre also offers courses related to Naturopathy and Yoga for the students. - Padmini
