About A.P Sen Memorial Girls College
AP Sen Memorial Girls College Lucknow started as Mahakali Pathshala in 1902. It then got recognition under the name Harimati Balika Vidyalay. At that time, the school was set up exclusively for the education of Bengali students in their mother tongue. Subsequently, in 1933, the UP Board gave it temporary recognition as a High School and the name of the school was rechristened to Jubilee Girls School. It got permanent recognition in 1944. In 1947, in the year of India's independence, the school graduated itself into an Inter College and finally into a Degree College in 1955. Since then the college is affiliated to Lucknow University and is, in fact, the first women's college to get affiliation from the university. It was the efforts of the Late Miss Beena Dutta, the school's first principal that the school could transform itself from an ordinary pathshala into a renowned degree college in Lucknow. The college finally acquired its present name in memory of the late poet, Shri Atul Prashad Sen, who was a social reformer, philanthropist, educationist, and litterateur, all combined into one.
Courses and infrastructure Located at a walking distance from the Charbagh railway station in Lucknow, the college offers undergraduate and postgraduate courses in the Arts stream. Among the subjects taught here are Hindi, English, Sanskrit, Economics, Sociology, Political Science, History, Anthropology, Education and Physical Education. The college has 15 classrooms, a staffroom, restrooms, and a common room for students. It has a library with a seating capacity for 80 students. Additionally, there are five computers with the college, internet connectivity, parking facilities, canteen and first-aid facilities. There is an Ancient Indian History museum in the college where there is a collection of coins and other artifacts of those times.
There are various committees and associations like Parents-Teachers Association, Alumni Association, Career Counseling Cell, AIDS Awareness Cell, Quality Assurance Cell and Grievance Redressal Cell. NSS and NCC participation are also available. There are four units of NSS active in the college. By getting involved in the same, the students can get valuable experience in community service. Through NSS, the students get to do 120 hours of community work in a year. Among other activities, birth and death anniversaries of great personalities are observed every year. During the occasion of Basant Panchami, the students celebrate Saraswati Puja with much fanfare. Cultural activities and sports also form part of the curriculum.
Admissions For undergraduate admissions at this college, students must have scored at least 45% marks in their intermediate exam from UP Board or other equivalent qualification recognized by Lucknow University. For SC and ST candidates, the minimum required marks are 40%. For postgraduate admissions, the students should have studied the subject, in which they wish to study, in their graduation.
The admission process involves submitting of documents like pass certificate and mark sheets of 10th and 12th, transfer certificate and four passport-sized photographs. Additionally, you need to submit a character certificate, issued from the institution last studied. Candidates desirous of reservation, to submit a caste certificate issued by the Tehsildar. Private students too may apply by submitting a provisional certificate issued by the Centre Superintendent. - Dhruv
