About Arignar Anna Government Arts College, Namakkal
Arignar Anna Government Arts College was established in 1968-69 at Namakkal, Tamil Nadu. The college was named after the then Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Shri CN Annadurai. In the beginning, it was run from the campus of Government High School, Namakkal. At that time, the college was affiliated to the University of Madras. In 1971, the college got its own permanent campus at its present location on the Namakkal-Mohanur Highway. The present campus is located 5 km from Namakkal town. Accredited with ‘B' Grade by NAAC, the college is currently affiliated to the Periyar University.
Academics When it started in 1968-69, the college offered only four courses in the science and the arts streams. These courses were at the undergraduate level. However, over the years, the college expanded itself and now it offers as many as 13 undergraduate courses, 8 postgraduate courses, and a number of M.Phil. and Ph.D. programs.
Infrastructure Arignar Anna Government Arts College has a spacious campus and the buildings are most modern. Among the facilities available are two libraries, one central library, and the other digital library. The central library has more than 40,000 volumes of books. It has subscriptions to 60 printed journals and magazines. Nine dailies are also subscribed to by the library. A photocopy machine is also available with the library and its services can e availed at a nominal cost. Besides the central library, there are 12 departmental libraries as well.
The college also provides for the main hostel, which is located within the college premises. It has been functioning since September 2000. While allotting hostel accommodation, preference is given to students who are from faraway places. The hostel provides neat and clean accommodation. For meals, vegetarian food is served along with milk and eggs. An RO drinking water facility is also available.
Among other infrastructure are CC TV surveillance, sports, internet, biometric attendance, photocopying, telephone, health centre, gardening, reading rooms and recreational facilities. The college offers scholarships to needy students. To the newly admitted students, to familiarize them with the various aspects of college life, the college provides ten hours of bridge course. Then there is the soft skill training program which is provided to the final year students to help them with their placement. An Entrepreneurship Development Programme (EDP) also helps the students in improving their employable skills.
Admissions Arignar Anna Government Arts College is a government-run college and the admissions are governed by the Tamil Nadu Government Arts and Science Colleges Admission (TNGASA) guidelines.
