About Arignar Anna Government Arts College, Cheyyar
Arignar Anna Government Arts College, Cheyyar is located in the Thiruvannamalai district of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. The college was set up way back in the year 1967 to fulfill the higher educational needs of the students from neighbouring taluks of Cheyyar. The college provides for an affordable and low-cost means for higher education for the rural poor of the region. Most of the costs are covered by government scholarships that make the education almost free for students from the backward classes, most backward classes and SC/ST category.
Academics The college offers various undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programmes. The various disciplines offered are arts, science, and commerce. It was a year after its inception that the college offered its first-degree programs. It had then started with a total student strength of only 400 students and 18 teachers. The number of students in its roll these days is more than 3000. The teacher's number around 100 nowadays. Initially, the college began as a pre-university college. Only from the 2nd year of its inception that it started offering full-fledged degree courses in history, mathematics, physics and chemistry.
With the passage of years, Arignar Anna Government Arts College, Cheyyar started offering postgraduate courses to fulfill the aspirations for higher education among its students. As of now, the college is offering M.Phil and Ph.D. courses in all the disciplines available there. Apart from the usual subjects from the science and arts stream, to keep up with the latest demands, the college these days offers postgraduate courses in computer science and information technology as well. In 2001, for its quality of education, the college was accredited with 3 stars and again reaccredited as B+ in 2007. The college is presently affiliated to Thiruvalluvar University Vellore. Previously, until 2001, it was affiliated to University of Madras .
Infrastructure Located two km from Cheyyar town on a 69-acre land, the college has all the necessary infrastructure facilities necessary for a science college. It has well-equipped laboratories for all the branches of science and a computer lab for the computer courses. As part of its computer literacy programme, the college offers computer education to students from the non-computer courses too.
The college has a common General Library apart from the departmental libraries. The General Library is accessible to both the students and staff from 9:30 am to 4:30 pm on all working days. To borrow books from the library, the UG students are issued with a single library card, whereas two cards for the PG students.
The major sports that are played by the students of this college are cricket, football, volleyball, handball, badminton and chess.
Among the extracurricular activities are NCC, NSS and Youth Red Cross. These are voluntary activities and any student who wants to do community service for the greater benefit of humanity can take part in them.
The Computer Literacy Programme (CLP) is a specialized drive by the Government of Tamil Nadu in fostering the spread of computer education among its subjects. There is a separate computer lab for the program and all those students who are not from the computer science department can avail themselves of the benefits. As part of this program, the students are trained on the basics of MS Office, HTML, ‘C' language and internet technologies. At the end of the program, the students are issued with a certificate that helps them during placements. A common theory exam is held across the state of Tamil Nadu for all students under the CLP.
