| B.Tech in Metallurgical and Materials engineering The entry to this discipline of study is through IIT-JEE (Joint Entrance Examination). This examination is conducted annually usually on the second sunday of April. This discipline is usually chosen by All India Rank 1600 to 2500 students.
This discipline is a very exotic discipline which involves lots of solid state physics and solid state chemistry. This discipline is known for its interdisciplinary nature. The faculty in this discipline of study are extremely eminent. They have published lot of papers, have won a number of awards and are good consultants to industries.
The areas of research in this branch include Metal forming, Metal joining, Synthesis and Processing of Nanomaterials, Physical metallurgy, Computational metallurgy including DFT calculations, Molecular dynamics, FEM and Phase field modelling, Composites, Advanced materials, Modern materials, Biomaterials, Ceramics, etc.
Laboratory facilities in this department are phenomenal. Most of these facilities are bought by funds from the projects that professors here apply to. Some of them are TEM, SEM, DSC, Optical Microscopes, SPS, XRD machines and many more.
There are the following societies which are associated with this department. They are MetSA (Metallurgy Students Association), Material Advantage, Indian Institute of Metals Chennai Chapter, Indian Welding Society and Society for biomaterials and artificial organs.
The department also conducts a number of conferences, symposiums, technical festivals and a number of events which help in the overall progress of its students. - By Venkatesh, 08 Oct 2009
