About St. Mary’s College, Manarcadu
St. Mary's College was started in 1981 with an aim to fulfil the educational needs of the society forcing equality among different economic groups. It was inaugurated by Sri. Baby John as a junior college and it became a post-graduate college in 1999 when some of the postgraduate degrees were started. Currently, the college is offering 6 undergraduate and 4 postgraduate degrees and also supports research by students.
The college is affiliated under the Mahatma Gandhi University and is recognized under 12B 2(f) of UGC. It is also accredited by NAAC with B grade in the year 2016.
Location and InfrastructureIt is situated at half a kilometer distance from St. Mary's cathedral Manarcadu and almost 11 kilometers from Kottayam town. Initially, the college was started in the church building and the main building was inaugurated in 1983. The college campus is occupying 16 acres of land having many departments, spacious classrooms and well-equipped laboratories.
The library of the college is having an excellent collection of more than 18000 books. Apart from this, the college is also linked with the UGC network resource centre to support the students residing anywhere in the world. The library is open from 9 AM till 5 PM on working days and the photocopy service is also available at no additional cost.
There are separate laboratories in every department and the computer centre is equipped with all the modern equipment and facilities. The college is having a zoological museum with a huge collection of Indian biodiversity. A spacious seminar hall with digital and audio-visual facilities is available for conducting functions on the campus.
There is a Centre for English Language Learning and Communication Skills which is basically an English language lab for the students willing to learn the English language.
The college has an Archaeological Museum which started in 2004 to demonstrate the history of Manarcadu and St. Mary's Jacobite Syrian Cathedral. It is having a collection of old unique articles and art pieces including coins, silver rods, wooden vessels, bottles, etc.
Canteen and AccommodationA canteen is available for both students and staff. It offers proper sitting facilities and hygienic food that too at reasonable prices.
The campus has a women's hostel sponsored by UGC and located inside the campus. The management and administration of the hostel is by the college directly and ensures a safe and secure environment for girls to stay and study. Around 50 girls can be accommodated in the hostel at a time and they are bound to follow the rules and regulations of the premises.
ActivitiesIf we talk about various activities getting conducted at regular intervals, then sports and games come first. Students participate in different games at university or even state level. The institute has facilities for handball, gymnastics, water polo, kabaddi, etc on the campus.
The college also has a nature club which is a group of students having interest in the environment. This club conducts various meetings and camps to highlight issues related to nature. It also conducts nature camps in forests with the help of staff and provide proper training for the same.
Apart from these, the Film Club, Arts Club, Quiz Club, Women's club, Sahithya Vedi, etc are also formed in the college as per the interest of the students. They can also participate in N.C.C. and N.S.S. on a voluntary basis. - Padmini
