About Indira Gandhi National Open University, Regional Centre, Port Blair
IGNOU or Indira Gandhi National Open University was started in 1985 by an Act of Parliament as a 3-level organization. Its headquarter is in New Delhi, regional centers in the state capitals and lastly the individual centers in schools and colleges. The regional center in Port Blair was started in 2006, soon after the Tsunami. Initially, it was offering 33 different courses to around 1500 students and now the number has increased to 100 courses and more than 50000 students.
FeaturesIGNOU is functioning as an extended center for students to pursue higher studies in specialised areas of their studies. The center is offering various post-graduate level courses in different fields to the graduate students and are equivalent to similar academic courses available in regular colleges.
This center is also offering education to the jail inmates that too free of cost. They have a study center at Prothrapur jail.
To overcome the problem of shortage of academically resourceful persons in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, the Port Blair center also started the Saturday Video class since November 2017. Apart from this, they have a Gyandarshan #2 - an education TV channel that is available 24x7 at no cost.
LibraryThe library of IGNOU is considered as the biggest library or information center of India. Just like IGNOU, its library is also having 3 tier structural arrangements with its main library in headquarters New Delhi, sub-regional centres in states and at individual study centers. Every regional center and study center of the institute is having a library attached to it and the management of these libraries is taken care of by the main library situated in New Delhi. The collection includes term-end question papers, magazines, journals, reference books, textbooks, E-resources and online book portal subscriptions.
