The Institute of Cooperative Management, Madurai was started during 1982. The Institute is having national network through one National Institute known as Vaikunth Mehta National Institute of Cooperative Management, (VMNICM) Pune, Five Regional Institutes Cooperative Management and 14 Institutes of Cooperative Management spread all over the country for looking after the training requirements of the middle level executives. It is run by the National Council for Cooperative Training, (NCCT) New Delhi under the Ministry of Agriculture, Department of Agriculture & Cooperation, Government of India. The NCCT has been constituted by National Cooperative Union of India, (NCUI) under its bylaws with the concurrence of the Government of India. The annual budget is shared on 50:50 basis both by the Government of India and Tamilnadu Cooperative Union. The Institute is responsible to organize Management Development Programmes for the personnel working in the Cooperative Department and different cooperative sectors in Tamilnadu. The Institute conducts a Post Graduate Course for a period of 36 weeks on Higher Diploma in Cooperative Management (HDCM) for the newly recruited officers of the Cooperative Department, Cooperative Institutions and the private candidates. The Institute has conducted 88 programmes and trained 1946 participants during the year 2006-2007. The Institute has planned to conduct 81Management Development programmes during the year 2007-2008. The Institute is running a Staff and Students Cooperative store, which supplies all requirements of the office, the hostel mess and the Staff members of the Institute
