About Arignar Anna Government Arts College, Attur
Arignar Anna Government Arts College in Attur, Tamil Nadu, is a very old college. Situated at a foothill, 9 km away from Attur and close to the Salem-Cuddalore National Highway, it fulfills the educational aspirations of the rural and underprivileged youth from in and around Attur. In 1973, the college launched its first undergraduate program, BA Tamil. In the following years, it started a number of undergraduate and postgraduate courses in both arts and the science stream. In recent years, it has added programs on computer science, business administration and commerce as well. Both men and women can enrol for all of its programs, even though in the beginning, it started as a men's only college.
The college now offers a number of M.Phil and Ph.D. programs in Tamil literature, History, and Commerce. Ever since 1988-89, it is affiliated to the Periyar University Salem. The State Government of Tamil Nadu recognizes Arignar Anna Government Arts College as a Grade 1 college. It is also accredited with a ‘B' Grade by NAAC. The college has been named after CM Annadurai who was the former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. He was popularly called Arignar Anna, which means Anna the Scholar. A number of higher education institutions in Tamil Nadu have been named after this famous former Chief Minister.
Facilities and infrastructure The college has usual facilities like laboratories for all the science subjects and a well-equipped computer lab.
The college library, which was established in 1972 has 10,500 books in all, apart from magazines, newspapers, journals and periodicals. It has a reading room for the students with proper lighting and furniture. The library has materials for competitive exams like SSC, UPSC, TNPSC, TRB, RRB, BSRB, NET, SET, GATE, TOFEL, GRE and GMAT. There is also a provision for e-library, which is meant mainly for the M.Phil and Ph.D. students to access data for their research.
The college has a separate Physical Education Department which promotes all kinds of sports activities on the campus. There are facilities for sports like football, volleyball, cricket, shuttle badminton, ball badminton, kabaddi, kho-kho, cross country race, and athletics. The college regularly takes part in every intercollegiate tournament of the Periyar University.
Among the extracurricular activities that the students can take part in are NSS, NCC, Youth Red Cross (YRC), and Red Ribbon Club (RBC). There are various camps like blood donation camp, AIDS awareness camp, drug abuse prevention program and so on. The college has a Parents and Teachers Association (PTA) and Old Students Alumni Association (OSA).
The college has four hostels located in the vicinity of the campus. The hostels have facilities such as pure drinking water, food, washrooms, and a playground. The hostels are looked after by a warden for each hostel along with cooks, helpers and cleaners. The hostels have a peaceful surrounding. The hostels have been provided by the Backward, Class, Most Backward Class, Minorities and Tribal Welfare departments of the Tamil Nadu government. Poor students from the above categories are given first preference while allotting hostel accommodation.
Admissions Admission to Arignar Anna Government Arts College Attur is based on government norms. Aspiring students have to visit the college for applying for admissions. Students at Arignar Anna Government Arts College do not have to pay any tuition fees. Their fees are all covered by various scholarships that are offered by the departments of Backward/Most Backward Classes, Adi Dravidar and Tribal Welfare (SC/ST) of Govt. of Tamil Nadu.
