About Holy Cross Home Science College for Women
Holy Cross Home Science College was established in the year 1975 and is managed by the Society of the Sisters of the cross of Chavanod. The institution is affiliated to Manonmaniam Sundaranar University and is accredited with ‘B' grade by NAAC. The college is for girls and the sisters residing inside the college campus gives special care to the students. The institution offers technical education to the students residing in and around Tuticorin.
Academics The college has 3 departments- Department of Arts, Department of Science and Department of Commerce. Literature department of Tamil and English is operating under the department of Arts and it offers B.A –Tamil and English course. The UG courses B.SC- Computer Science, Food Science and Nutrition, Fashion Designing and Apparel Making are offered under the Department of Science. The department of Commerce offers B.com – Commerce and B.Com - Commerce with Computer Application. The college also offers PG courses on M.Sc Dietetics& Food Management and M.com. Certification course (6 months & 1 year) on fashion designing is also available in the college.
Infrastructure Holy Cross Home Science College has friendly campus with spacious classrooms for all the departments. The Department of Computer Science has modern computers with updated hardware and software necessary for the practical classes. The Fashion designing and apparel making department has well equipped fashion designing lab and textile testing lab. The fashion designing lab has the latest industrial machines, over lock machines, sewing machines, cutting tables, etc. A browsing center is available for the students with internet and intranet facilities. The department of food science and nutrition has separate labs for Biochemistry and nutrition.
The college library has many books, references, dictionaries and journals on all knowledge. The students can borrow books from the library or can also take a photocopy of the book needed. A separate audio visual room is available with digital resources like LCD, OHP, DVD player, etc. The college also provides hostel facilities for the students with furnished rooms, indoor games room, TV hall, aqua water facilities, Internet and Inverter. For the safety of the students, the college has installed CCTV cameras and entire the hostel area is under the surveillance of the CCTV cameras.
Activities The college gives importance to social service activities and has a separate unit for NSS, YRC, RRC. All the social service units conduct various activities regularly for the welfare of the public and also participate and conduct many awareness programmes. The college gives equal importance to sports and the students regularly participate and have won many medals in the intercollegiate and inter university tournaments in the games such as volley ball, badminton, kho-kho, etc. The college also has separate clubs and associations such as Eco club, consumer club, youth welfare, placement cell, language club, oracle literary club and Nutri-Dia association. All the clubs and the associations in the college conduct activities and events to fine tune the skills of the students.
