About University Institute of Legal Studies, Chandigarh
University Institute of Legal Studies is an integral part of Panjab University, Chandigarh. The institute, which is located in Chandigarh (Punjab), came into existence in 2004. University Institute of Legal Studies is duly approved by Bar Council of India (BCI), Government of India, New Delhi and currently, it conducts course in law at the degree level, that is, B.A. LL.B. (Hons.), which is a five-year integrated program. The institute offers this program as per the guidelines of BCI. University Institute of Legal Studies provides basic amenities for the smooth conduct of its courses.
Overview The University Institute of Legal Studies Chandigarh, more commonly known as UILS was established in the Northern Campus of Punjab University in 2004-05. Within a very short period of time, it has developed to secure its name among the top 20 law institutes of the country and the best institute in Punjab.
The Campus The lush green campus has a four-storeyed building consisting of 18 modern spacious classrooms, common rooms, an administrative office, an auditorium, a conference hall, computer lab with the most advanced computers along with free internet, a fully functional library and lots of other facilities. Moreover, since it is present in the University, students study in the A.C Joshi Library of PU in free time as it is the biggest and most developed library of Punjab. The campus also offers international level sports facilities such as swimming pool, cricket ground, hockey ground, football ground, shooting range, badminton, gymnasium hall, etc. The University has 8 hostels for boys and 10 hostels for girls. The whole campus is wi-fi enabled offering a wide range of facilities to students.
Courses The institute currently offers two graduate courses and two master courses. B.Com LL.B.(Hons.) 5 years Integrated Course and B.A. LL.B (Hons.) 5 years Integrated Course are the two main courses offered by the institute which has a very high reputation in the northern part of India. Both the 5-year courses have 120 seats each with an annual fee of Rs 72,000/-. The admission to these courses is conducted on the basis of merit of entrance test conducted by the university every year and class 12th examination. 50% of the weightage is given to the entrance test and the rest 50% is given to class 12th examination. The candidates should be below 20 years of age to give the entrance examination.
The next course offered is Master of Laws which is a one year course having 40 seats. The annual fee of the course is Rs 83,000/-. A candidate applying for the course should have a graduate degree of one of the mentioned courses- LL.B. 3 years degree/B.A. LL.B./B.Com. LL.B. 5 years degree examination of this University with a minimum of 55% marks. Admission to LL.M course is conducted on the basis of an Entrance Test conducted by the university. 80% of weightage is given to entrance exam and 20% to academic marks. The fourth course offered is Master of Laws which is an evening course and has the eligibility criteria, seats and fee structure same as the regular Master's course. - Rachit Bansal
