About Chembai Memorial Govt. Music College
Stared in 1957 to honor Chembai Vaidyanatha Bhagavatar (1895-1974) who was a noted Carnatic Music vocalist of the 20th century. The Chembai Memorial Government Music College in Palakkad is one of the main centres of excellence in teaching classical music in the State.
When this premier institution celebrates its golden jubilee in 2007, the college authorities and music lovers feel that it should be made a music university, on the lines of Kalamandalam, or at least an autonomous institution for its overall development as a centre of learning for music, both vocal and instrumental. The institution was started in 1957 as a music academy under the Director of Public Instruction.
In 1977, Jana Praveena and Ganabhooshanam, both four-year courses, were started. From 2001, it was made a music college affiliated to Calicut University, with the starting of new BA courses in vocal, veena, violin, mridangam and so on, admitting 130 students annually.
