About Punjab University Rural Centre
Punjab University Rural Centre in Kaoni village of Shri Muktsar Sahib district is the first and only rural regional centre of Punjab University, Chandigarh in Punjab state. Although the university was already running the regional centre at Shri Muktsar Sahib city but still PURC, Kaoni was established to provide the rural area students of Malwa zone of Punjab, a chance to get quality education. It was the idea of R.C. Sobti, the former V.C. of PU, Chandigarh to establish the rural centre. So the university took over the old building of the discontinued home science college of Punjab Agricultural University Ludhiana in Kaoni village in 2010 to establish its rural centre. The campus has the area of about 20 acres of the land which was taken at lease from village panchayat. Currently there are five full time courses running at the rural centre and the construction of modern state of art building is undergoing to accommodate more courses in future as the university is considering to merge the regional centre at Shri Muktsar Sahib with the rural centre. The rural centre has the hostel facilities for the teachers posted here. Under the current principal S. Janmit Singh , the rural centre is aiming for more number of students .
