Oldest and least expensive college in Ludhiana Ludhiana is famous for two things, its cloth industries and its colleges. Satish Chander Dhawan College was established in 1920 and is one of the oldest institutions of the country, especially the northern region. Even after 99 years, it has continued to provide the best and cheapest education available in Punjab.
Students from all over Punjab come to SCD Government college to take admissions. It is mainly famous for its B.Com and B.A courses. Both courses have cut-offs higher than 90% every year. Its campus is the largest campus in Ludhiana. Even after being a government college, its infrastructure is pretty good. The academic level is good (although not the best). The best part is its fee structure, with an annual fee (including examination fee of both semesters) of approx 9,000 for B.A courses which is currently the lowest fee in any college in and around Ludhiana. For some courses, its fee is even as low as Rs 500 per month. After doing their graduation from SCD government college, students usually go to Panjab University, Chandigarh to do higher studies and get placed from there easily.
A few bad points include, firstly, its orthodox nature, with most of the courses being 'boys only' courses. Secondly, girls have to compulsory wear suits and students cannot use mobile phones within the campus. Thirdly, there is a lack of attendance regulation, with students missing classes for the entire year and still getting the degrees.
The popularity of this college is so much so that recently, another government college has been constructed in Ludhiana to accommodate the rising number of students applying for admissions in this college.
Overall, I would say though it is not the best, but it is as good as it can be. - By Rachit Bansal, 20 Jun 2019
