About Government College Daman
Government College Daman was established in 1966 and is administered by the Union Territory of Dadra & Nagar Haveli and Daman & Diu. It is one of the oldest colleges in the region. The college is quite a popular one, as other than from the Union Territory itself, students from adjacent places in Gujarat and Maharashtra also study at this college. The college is a coeducational one and is renowned for its quality of education. It is affiliated to the Veer Narmad South Gujarat University and offers both graduate and postgraduate courses in the field of arts, science and commerce. The courses are UGC recognized. The college has around 1300 students.
Infrastructure The campus is spread across 27 acres of land with lush green vegetation surrounding the college buildings. The classrooms and the laboratories are well equipped. The library is stocked with ample number of books and publications in different languages such as English, Hindi and Gujarati. There is a spacious room for students to engage in self-study. Internet facility is also available at the library.
There is an auditorium named Swami Vivekananda Auditorium with a seating capacity of around 700 students. Well-furnished, it is air-cooled, sound proof and has the latest audio-visual equipment. Apart from being used during annual functions and seminars, it is also used for many government functions.
The college has a big sports complex with infrastructure for most indoor and outdoor games. There are multiple facilities for football, cricket, volleyball, table tennis and a few other sports. There is an athletic track encircling the grounds. There are arrangements for spectators to witness the games and matches. Students have often represented the college at university and district level sports tournaments.
Among the other extracurricular activities, there are options for students to enrol for National Cadet Corps (NCC), National Service Scheme (NSS) and a variety of clubs like English literary club, Ramanujan club, Darwin club, Flores club, Ek Bharat Srestha Bharat club and a lot more.
For resident students there are separate hostels for boys and girls. The hostels are located within the college campus. The boy's hostel has 30 rooms with arrangement for 80 students. The girl's hostel, which has been recently built, has 43 rooms with twin sharing facilities. The hostels have facilities like mess, dining room, common rooms, etc.
Scholarships Eligible students can avail of scholarships which are disbursed by the UT administration exclusively reserved for girls and students from the SC, ST and minority community. - Dhruv
