About Nirmala College
Nirmala College is situated on a green hillock by the side of Muvattupuzha -Thodupuzha road and close to the confluence of three rivers (''Thriveni Sangamam''). It was founded in 1953 by His Grace Most Rev. Dr. Augustine Kandathil, Arch Bishop of Ernakulam. The college celebrated the Golden Jubilee in the year 2002-''03. This is the 55 th year of its glorious service to the cause of higher education. Renowned for its picturesque landscape and tranquil serenity, the college provides a congenial atmosphere for study and research. There are 14 graduate courses, 8 post graduate courses and 4 PhD programs and has on its roll more than 2000 students.
InfrastructureThe library has internet facilities along with a good collection of books, magazines and journals. It has subscription to many national and international periodicals and journals. The department offers book bank service to the students and the computerized system facilitates easy retrieval of information as well as the Online Public Access Catalogue.
The college has separate labs for computers, language, science and research. For research work, there are different labs for chemistry, physics and zoology. There are 6 computer labs and one language lab under the Department of English.
The college canteen is quite spacious with adequate sitting arrangements for students as well as staff. It offers hygienic food that too at a reasonable price.
The Yoga center fulfils the spiritual requirement of the students and there are around 60 students who attend the yoga classes on a regular basis. The health centre is having various gym equipment and there are coaches to train the students.
There is a Botanical garden in the college that was started in 1997 and focuses on the cultivation of various shrubs, herbs and trees. It is having 2 water bodies for the hydrophytes to grow.
Additional facilitiesA unique feature of Nirmala College is its Civil Service Academy run by ALS Satellite Education Pvt. Ltd, which helps the students in preparing for civil services exam. It conducts regular classes and the candidates can attend either in regular mode or on weekends.
The Inflibnet center of the college offers online access to resources and publications available online.
AccommodationThere are 6 hostels in the campus; 4 for girls (Alphonsa, Little Flower, St. Joseph's and Assissi), 1 for boys (Jeevajypthi) and 1 for sportspersons. The permission for hostel accommodation must be approved on time. This admission is valid for one academic year only. Students need to apply for hostel accommodation every year and the wardens can grant or even deny your application for whatsoever reason. These hostels have very strict rules and the residents are bound to follow them. No guests are allowed in the hostel and the students must make their entries in the register while leaving as well as entering the hostel. - Padmini
